View Full Version : Old receivers - usable?
I have three old receivers that I need to get rid of. One is a DishPVR 721, and the other two are older, non-DVR models (not sure of the numbers right now). The question is, given the MPEG-4 switchover, are these even still usable? Should I be trying to give them away, or should I just throw them away?
Thanks,
Aaron

AaronThe 721 is a boat anchor throw it away, it was part of the TiVo lawsuit. 721/921 &942 all had to be removed from service except to original owners. Older receivers wit blue or yellow cards probably still work but will need to be upgraded to purple cards, may not be worth the effort.
Much appreciated, that's exactly the information I needed.
If anybody out there needs an old receiver for whatever reason, let me know - otherwise, I'll put them on Freecycle and try to get rid of them that way. I hate to throw out perfectly good gadgets.

Since the 721 is history, I pulled the hard drive and found an external box that would work with it and now use it as an external drive. That particular hard drive needs a lot of start power so if you decide to do this, get an external box that has two separate power supplies, one 12V and one 5V. It will have a four wire connection between the power brick and the external box instead of a coax type power connector.

I just restarted service with Dish after several years. I used an OLD 3000 I had in a box in the basement. I had to get a new card for it, but it works fine. Has a timetable and methodology been announced for the Mpeg-4 transition?

All HD is now mpeg4 but, we don't know when SD will make the switch. I would say 5 years +.

SD on the Eastern Arc, internationals and public interest excepted, is in MPEG-4.
