View Full Version : "Non-Broadcast", LPTV or DT only Local Stations on D*?

This is an expansion of something I wrote on an earlier thread.

In my former home market of Roanoke/Lynchburg, VA, DirecTV launched locals including "WBVA/WB5", a mostly (yes, I said mostly) cable channel serving as the market's WB Network affiliate. It's operated by the local Fox affiliate (WJPR/WFXR Fox 21/27) and is a full-time locally-managed channel. The only over-air exposure for it is as a subchannel on WJPR-DT 20.

I'm currently in Toledo, OH, which doesn't look like it'll get D* local channels for some time. In this market, there's also a "WB5", operated by the major local cable provider (Buckeye CableSystem). It is also a 24/7 full-time broadcast style channel, and as far as I know, this WB Network affiliate doesn't even transmit as a subchannel on any broadcast DTV transmitter.

Which brings me to my question - for which other markets does DirecTV bring in non-full power analog local network affiliates?

To qualify on my list, the station can be either an LPTVer, cable-only or mostly cable distributed by a digital subchannel.

To date, I can only list two that are already on the D* birds:

* "WBVA/WB5" (WB, Roanoke/Lynchburg, VA, subchannel 2 of WJPR-DT 20 Lynchburg, VA)
* WBCQ-CA 25 Cincinnati (UPN)

Other possibles for the future would include:

* "WTWB/WB5" (WB, Toledo, OH, cable only)
* "CYB.wb" (WB, Tri-Cities, TN/VA - Bristol/Kingsport/Johnson City - subchannel of one of the local network affiliates there)

Any others?

Mike

Very good, Chris! I didn't know there were that many out there. I wonder if Dish has ANY of the above type stations...

DISH just added WJPR-DT20 (WB5) yesterday in Roanoke/Lynchburg. Oddly, it is listed as WJPR 21
in the EPG.

Oddly enough, originally Fox 21/27 planned to split the two channels...putting WB on WJPR/21 (Lynchburg, analog) and keeping Fox on WFXR/27 (Roanoke, analog). They even filed for on-channel boosters in the opposite cities of the licensed city (i.e. one for 21 in Roanoke, one for 27 in Lynchburg).

At some point, the Grant people backed off this plan, and instead just put "WBVA" on the DT subchannel. The "WB 5" branding is recent, again, based on their cable position in most Roanoke Valley systems.

I swear we also get some of those in NYC, like WRNN, WFUT and WMBC.

WRNN is actually a full-power station out of Kingston, NY. It's a TV version of a radio "rimshot"...but it's full-power.

WMBC and WFUT are both full-power stations licensed to Newark, NJ.
