View Full Version : PVR 501 Turns Off After Auto-Tune Event Is Over
After getting P196 a week or two ago, my 501 now turns off after it auto-tunes to a show and the show is over. It doesn't matter if the 501 was already on before the auto-tune timer or not. Even if I turn the 501 off and back on during the auto-tuned event, after the show is over, it turns off. This really pisses off my 4-year old, for whom I have auto-tuned her various afternoon shows. Is there a workaround for this? Am I the only one experiencing this?
As I recall, prior to P196, the PVR would shut off if it was off before the auto-tuned show. If it was already on, it would stay on after the auto-tuned show was over.

Have you reset the receiver by pushing the power button and the info button at the same time, since you got P196 ? Have you also tried to do switch check again , or the smart card reset? Unplug the unit and wait a couple of minutes? After all software updates you need to do one of these things , or sometimes all of these things, to make sure it works properly.
Another thing you could do instead of auto tune the programs -just set them to pvr them. But don't protect these programs and they will get recorded over and it won't interfear with the shows you wan't to record.
If all else fails, and it continues to do this and you don't like it , call Dish and get a replacement sent to you. Just make sure you have the extended warrenty for $1.99 a month . Also wait one month after you get the warrenty before you make a claim , so it's covered.
I do have the $1.99 warranty. All I've done is rebooted the receivers (I have two 501s and they both do this now) by holding the power button for a few seconds. I'll try all the other resets you mention. I don't really want to PVR the shows. Auto-tuning is what I need.
I'll post back after I try the resets (thanks for the suggestions) and let y'all know if it fixes it or not. It sure does seem like a bug with the new firmware, though.

Your welcome. Hope it works out for you.
Something else must be going on here like a neighbor with a UHF remote. I have had a 501 since day 1, which I leave on virtually all of the time, now running P196. I use autotunes all of the time, and I have never seen the unit turn off on its own. Maybe the power supply is dying and causing shutdowns. I don't see how it could be the software up rev, as no one else (here or on DBSF) is reporting this. At any rate, this is certainly curious behavior, and unexpected.

I have seen the 501 do this as Andrea described. It reminds me of when the 4700 timers would make the receiver turn on and off by itself for auto tune shows. Also the receiver would turn back to the channel it was on before the timer fired.
I have the UHF antennas off of my receivers. I use only IR. The different methods of resetting and rebooting the receiver has not changed the auto-tune behavior for me.
