View Full Version : Recording Series, avoiding duplicates
When trying to catch up on a show like NCIS, why cant the DRV (I have 2 HR21-700) not record an episode that I've seen in say the last 21-28 days?
I think this was a feature on my tivo....would sure be nice for shows like Bones, NCIS and CSI that I never watched first run.

I think you mean a show you have recorded in the last 21-28 days right?
Absolutely. I meant one that had been recorded within the last 21-28 days.
I thought this was a valid feature that was in our software today.....guessing that it was in the tivo days.
Now if I set up a record series, first-run, I dont have to worry about duplicates. Not so easy when I select Both.

Even when selecting Both, it should not record an episode that it has already recently recorded. The exception is when the Guide Data is not complete, thus the DVR cannot distinguish one episode from another. You'll see this when the description of a show has "No Information Available". Unfortunately, whether you have Tivo or an HR2x, the result is going to be the same.

It should not record episodes that you have seen recently. As I recall, it doesn't have a specific number of days, but the episode has to be history list. However, it is still dependent on the guide data from the broadcasters being correct.
Well I apologize for posting this, I did search for an answer before posting. I had totally forgotten about the guide data!
Maybe this is an example of something missing from USA's guide data.
I just looked at today's recordings and sure enough two episodes are not going to record. If I'd just waited until after the run to daycare, I'd have seen that it was not recording all episodes.
This wasnt supposed to be a tivo over directv post, so apologies if it read with that tone.
Thanks for the input.

Just to add on, just because the Guide Data displays "No further information" does not mean that the DVR cannot differentiate one episode from another. There are many factors in the background that we are not privy to as to how the DVR determines what shows are first run, repeats, and if the show has been recorded before. While the "No further information" is a good indicator that Guide Data is lacking, the DVR can often still determine if a show is first run or a repeat and will record it accordingly. The bigger issue with that is when it tries to differentiate between repeat episodes.

Then why does it record the 3 daily show episodes that are run every day when I ask it to only record first run ??

I think that's a case where there isn't even enough information in the guide data for it to determine first run/repeat.

In those cases, it sees each episode as First Run, but cannot differentiate between the episodes to see that you have already recorded it. Once again, a Guide Data issue.

Because Comedy Central doesnt give a flying you know what about its guide data, the DVR has absolutely no idea those are all the same episode.
