View Full Version : 24 Hour Recording Strikes Again...Wipes HD
The HR2x series is like a teenager...you should never leave them alone in the house for any length of time. We made the mistake this past weekend and when we got back one of our HR20-700 devices had decided to record a show for 24 hours wiping everything else off the drive (except a few K programs). When we turned it on...it just locked up. A RBR seems to have it functioning again.
I wonder if instead of the Protection Plan, DirecTV would consider a Babysitter plan.

For those of you with a Eureka season pass on SYFY, beware that it is set to record for 21 straight hours on 9/4 I believe it is (check to-do list to make sure). Obviously these are re-runs. I'm hoping they correct this before they record, but if not I have to remember to delete the to-do soon.

I hadn't seen anyone mention this in a long time. I had hoped this bug was finally fixed.

+1 on I thought they fixed this.
This happened to me over a year ago when I was recording MotoGP on Speed. Luckily I was home. The HR21 just 'froze' on recording the program and was non-responsive to any inputs. I could watch the race just fine though. A RBR fixed it.

Correct. The repeats do not include any information on them so the DVR's see it as a First Run.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll check mine out.

Just checked my To Do list.
My HR22 shows that it will be recording all those episodes. They also all have the same generic description.
I'll have to leave a note somewhere to remind me to check it again and delete those episodes from recording.
If you check http://www.syfy.com/schedule/index.php?date=4-SEP-2009&feed_req= , even they don't have the episode titles there. They're completely blank.

I've had that happen once for sure, maybe twice in three years. Each time I caught them on the following morning at about 14 hours in!
Fortunately, this has not happened in a very long time, and like others, I thought it was fixed. Your teenager analogy is apt.:)

I had something like this happen but it seemed to obey my 5 limit setting, it just recorded 5 and then recorded over them again and again. Are you guys saying that the episode limit may not work all the time?

In this case the HR20 was recording one program the entire time not multiple episodes of series link.

That's how the problem manifested here, the very few times I've had it. (and not in a very long time)
The guilty show appeared to be Curious George. As hasan and DVDK posted it was one show where instead of ending after 30 minutes...the guide data incorrectly allowed it to record for 24 hours. We've had it happen about four times on our four (used to be five) receivers over the past two-and-a-half years.
Ken that has never happened to me, something must be wrong with your specific DVR or your dish is installed wrong. It can't possibly be an actual bug in the HR2x.

Lee,
You're right...I guess the dish I built out of parts from my old BUD just doesn't cut it. BTW, do you think it's really necessary to tighten those F Connectors all the way? They hurts my fingers.

Well, my HR20-700 has a 1 TB drive inside (and everything defaults to K), so this bug doesn't worry me much.

I had what I thought was a similar problem with my new HR23 filling the hd w/ random series and news channels only to find it was my dear old dad trying to figure out the 'newfangled' remote by resorting to random button mashing...

Sarcasm aside, I think it's possible that it isn't a bug in the HR series in the traditional sense. The HR boxes are guide-centric...they do what the Guide says to do. So in this case, if the Guide info says it's 24 hours long or 14 or whatever, that's what gets recorded.
This is just one of the unpleasant side effects of having a guide-centric approach. I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.

I've seen this before, most of the time the guide data will change to show that they are indeed repeats and those shows will be deleted from the todo list.

That is possible, but if it were a bug in the guide, I would think that when this happened, you would have multiple people complaining about the problem at the same time, on the same recording. Unless of course the guide data is getting corrupted after it is on the DVR (or as it is being received from the DVR).

They have been updated on syfy.com, and seeing that some are from season 1 (I didn't start watching until season 2) I will be picking and choosing what to record. As of last night my HR was still going to record the whole marathon.

Maybe not! How many people have HR2X and recorded that same episode of Curious George? Now subtract all the people who are not on this forum and the number may be only one (Ken). If it had been a show like Lost or CSI then I would say there's no doubt that your correct.

Fair enough in this case. However, there have been sporadic reports of this problem for the last several years. I've never seen any report of a second person having the problem with the same show. Not definitive proof, but guide data (in the stream) wouldn't be the first place that I would look. Again it may be getting corrupted on the box itself.

Funnily enough, I saw a post in a FIOS forum about the same problem with their DVR (is it Motorola, not sure?). See http://www.highdefforum.com/916491-post1.html Makes me think it might be caused by a guide data problem rather than a bug in the DVR.
