I'm re-hooking up after moving. I have an Onkyo Digital Home Amp with S-video jacks and cables. I have a Toshiba TV with 1 S-video input.

When I hook up my 501 via the Red/White/Yellow Cable from 510 to TV everything works fine. Then when I run the s-video cable from the Onko to TV, the DVD player comes through fine but the 501 picture goes black and white and coarse. Pulling the yellow plug from the TV just makes the screen go blank.

Any advice?

I have a digital optical cable hooked up from the 501 to the Onkyo and that works great. I'm just struggling with how to get video from the 501 to the Onkyo and back to the TV.

Does the DVD player's S video go through the Onkyo? If so, you probably need to unplug the RCA video (yellow) from the satellite going into the Onkyo. It will usually pass S or Composite video but not both.

Just my guess.

Yes, I have DVD going through Onkyo, but do have the RCA going directly from the 501 to the TV

So your TV only recognizing the S input from the Onkyo as opposed to the composite input of the 501.

You are going to have to choose one or the other. Or go behind TV and unplug cables everytime.

If you route the S from 501 thru the Onkyo, you will have to turn on Onkyo everytime you want to watch your TV with 501 and select that video signal.

I just moved and I know I had it hooked up before so that I didn't have to change wires each time. I'm pretty sure I just had the video going from the 501 to the TV but not sure if it was via the RCA or via the coax.

How do you recommend? Should the 501 go out to the Onkyo and then back to the TV?

If you do it that way, you will have to turn on Onkyo each time to watch Dish (probably) and that would be annoying to me...

Another way would be hookup the Coax out of the 501 to modulate the signal onto channel 3 or 4 of the tuner of your TV.

How would I do it ?

Easy - There should be a "Monitor Out" port on the Onkyo, either or both of S-Video / Composite. Hook this port to the TV (only one - S-Video OR Composite - not both)

The Onkyo probably has multiple A/V inputs, one labeled DVD and say, one Labeled TV/DBS. Now hook your DVD player into the DVD inputs, and the 508 into the TV/DBS inputs. If you're using S-Video anywhere, then all connections must be S-Video, or all connections should be composite. You could also hookup the RF coax connector between the 508 and the TV, but that gets you only mono sound from the TV's speakers.

As Tom said - this approach requires you to turn on the Onkyo to watch either DVD or DBS. Might bother him, doesn't bother me - in fact - I do 99%+ of my TV watching in that room listening to the sound via my receiver - it sounds SO MUCH better than the crappy TV sound system.

My setup - my TV has multiple inputs, only one of which is S-Video. My TV also has outputs (composite and audio). I have the DVD player going into the A/V receiver (using the Digital coax), and my TV outputs going into the TV/DBS inputs of the A/V receiver. My primary satellite receiver is feeding (via S-Video and audio) the TV directly, while the A/V receiver's Monitor port (only composite) is feeding the TV's 2nd video input. I watch satellite directly via the TV, audio out via the receiver. I watch DVD's via composite for now, via the A/V receiver. I also feed my VCR and some A/V inputs from my computer into the A/V receiver.

Thanks so much, friends, for all of your help. I didn't have the S-video cable from the 501 to the Onkyo. Blame it on moving exhaustion, please. :)

I appreciate your help - sorry to take your time needlessly!
