View Full Version : Optical audio signal on standby

Strange, my HR22-100 does not ouput on the optical port when in standby. Are you saying that there is enough there to keep an A/V switch from auto-sensing, or that you actually have a digital audio signal being output when in standby? What model reveiver is it? A little bit of a hassle, but you can always turn off the digital output when not needed.

Figured it might be worth moving this to its own thread since it's off-topic. The former described above is exactly it. There's enough of a signal to prevent the switch from auto-sensing. My other devices completely disable the optical port when the device is powered down. I assume because the HR21 never fully powers down when "turned off", this port is left in a similar standby mode. No sound is fed to the AV receiver. My HR22 experienced the same "issue". Turning off digital sound doesn't disable the port.

I just found a thread where this was originally reported in '07. Looks like the problem is that old.

I just tested mine as well and I don't have audio over optical when I'm in standby on my 21-100.

Just out of curiosity, Is the audio constant or does it come and go?

I have the same problem with my HR20-700. It never fully turns off the optical output when in standby. Other devices that I have tried all shut down the optical output when turned off. If I disconnect the optical cable coming from the HR20 when it is in standby I can see the red light coming out of the cable where with other devices this goes out. I am currently trying to use a reverse splitter to connect two devices to my audio receiver, but this only works when only one device is active. I have to pull the cable from the HR-20 to use my blu-ray player. When I shutdown the blu-ray player I can leave it plugged in to the splitter with no problem and use the HR-20.

This is one of the few things remaining that I would like to see fixed on the HR-20. Does anyone know if it is fixed in the other HR-XX boxes?

I don't have audio on my AV receiver either when my box is in standby. However, the presence of the signal in standby is causing interference with the splitter. It doesn't flip back and forth between devices. I don't get audio at all through the receiver when my DVD player is powered on and my HR21 is in standby. I speculate that this is either because a) the splitter completely fails due to the presence of both signals or b) the splitter is processing the stronger signal (and, since I hear nothing, my HR21 must have a stronger output) My assumption is with a).

I have to pull the cable from the HR-20 to use my blu-ray player. When I shutdown the blu-ray player I can leave it plugged in to the splitter with no problem and use the HR-20.

Exactly my situation. This has to cause severe wear and tear on the jack over time. Not to mention the damage to the cable.

If your receiver has an open digital coax input, monoprice has TOS-Link to Coax converter for $11.16: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10423&cs_id=1042302&p_id=2948&seq=1&format=2

There's an idea I hadn't considered. Thanks for the suggestion. For me, anything to get away from pulling cables. Especially when I have to walk my wife through it. She wants to take the cable and strangle me with it. :eek2:

Apparently this must be a function that "auto-switching" devices handle differently.
