To See Memphis, Tn Local Channels. You'd want Direc Tv as they have been on Direc Tv over a year already. I have Them.
Channel 3 - WREG- CBS Television Service
Channel 5 - WMC - NBC Television Service
Channel 10- WKNO - PBS Television Service
Channel 13- WHBQ - FOX Television Service
Channel 24- WPTY - ABC Television Service
Channel 30- WLMT - UPN Television Service
Seems Like Direc TV gets Local Channels before Dish even thinks about getting them. Just a thought that you might want to switch your satellite service so you can see your Locals. I know it sure is nice to be able to see the Local News, Weather, etc on Satellite TV instead of cable.

Thats not a very accurate statement. DirecTV was first in alot of cities and E* has been first in a lot of cities as well. Example Little Rock, Fayetteville/Fort Smith, and others. E* has also announced the Memphis locals for Q3 of this yr.
Locals on Dish (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=15058&pagenumber=1)
There are some cities that Dish had before Direc Tv had up. I think Albuqurque, New Mexico was and a few others. But Direc TV had The Majority of there Local markets up and running way before dish started. Getting back to the Original Post. Memphis, Tennessee Locals have been on Direc TV Ever Since January 2002 I Remember because Last year I was so happy to be able to see all the New Years Day Bowl games and Super Bowl Last January Finally on my Local Stations for the first time on Direc TV. Direc Tv has had Memphis Locals on there that long already and Dish doesn't. That's WAY WAY Behind in my opinion. A year and a half behind and still counting.

Both companies have their reasons as to why they launch certain markets at certain times. I would not switch satellite providers just because of locals. You can still get them OTA either way.

ya - and OTA is free too :)
Who cares much anyhow if certain locals are coming month or 2 or so sooner or later at either provider... As long as they are coming for sure...
On the other hand though - so is Christmas - LOL :)
That goes to show how missinformed Mike Richardson is. Here in the Memphis Local Market. I live in Northern, Ms The farthest County East covered by the Memphis DMA which is 90 Miles. YES 90 Miles from Memphis. Here in Northern, Mississippi I live in the Farthest County east covered by The Local Memphis Market and I Cannot Receive Memphis Via OTA Antenna. You must either have Cable TV or Satellite. I have the Later. Yes One and a half year and still counting is a long time to be without locals if I had dish Network and I couldn't get Memphis I'd say Goodbye to Dish Yesterday. Thank goodness I have Direc TV. It's better More Sports, More Locals, Less Bull****.

Well I live in the quad cities (Illinois-Iowa) and we are due the locals in Q3 of this year. Cedar Rapids and Des Moines are already up in Iowa. Well D* has yet to offer locals locals in Cedar Rapids and has no plan for the quad cities. E* has had Des Moines up for awhile now and only recently has D* finally got the channels up. Looks like E* is beating D* to the punch. does that mean that E* is that much better than D*. Msguy .. don't come on the E* board waving your pom poms ... it seems like you are trying to convince yourself you did the right thing.

That depends on your definition of bull****, Msguy. I think sports and locals that are not in my market (houston) are bull*, but I think movie channels are not, and DISH has more.
* Locals that are not in my market are bull to me, since they don't affect me directly. However they do get more people onto satellite and that is important, so they are not total bull.

What kind of antenna were you using to get Memphis OTA? Its not like there are any mountains or other natural obstructions to speak of. I lived in Stuttgart, AR for 14 yrs. about 100 miles from Memphis and received 3, 5, and 13 with no trouble using a standard rooftop antenna.

It all depends.
DirecTV currently offers locals in 52 of the top 54 markets; by the end of the year, DirecTV will offer the top 65 markets. DirecTV currently offers 61 markets, and will have 3 more this month, and 101 total by the end of the year.
Dish Network only offers 44 of the top 54 markets; by the end of the year, Dish Network will have 59 of the top 65 markets. However, Dish Network is concentrating on the mid-sized markets. They currently offer 14 markets from market 70 to 99, while DirecTV only offers 5. Dish Network currently offers 68 markets, will have 1 more this month, and 106 total by the end of the year.
Who will have more markets? Dish Network. Who will be able to offer more households in the US local channels? DirecTV.
It's a wash.
First of all I want to appologize to Mike Richardson if I might have seemed to be a little Huffy and Puffy. Forgive me. It's just that Direc TV has had Memphis on them for a year and a half and counting now and I am happy to see something a little more "Local" As to the question about the old OTA Antenna. We had one that was just a standard rooftop antenna. Some Days You Could Pick Up Memphis and Some Days you could not. Sometimes Snow, Sometimes Clear. But Never Perfect. Direc Tv brings them in perfect for me. Even the Local Cable Company here in my town that gets Memphis brings the picture from Memphis in at very poor quality. Ghosts, Lines running down it I mean it's viewable but still not very good. I live in Alcorn County which is the Very Last County East in Northern, Ms covered by Memphis. Columbus, Tupelo are 50 miles to the south of me and they are supposed to be coming to Direc TV Any Day now. And I won't even be eligible for those because Memphis is The Local DMA here. Demographically I am closer to Tupelo-Columbus. Direc Tv Carying Memphis is great and I just think that dish has lagged behind because Direc has had them since January '02. Glad that Memphis is listed as coming soon to dish. But glad Direc TV already has them and i've been enjoying them.

SHVIA needs to be modified so you can get these neighboring DMA's, ofcourse it would take an act of congress to get it done. I encourage everyone to complain to your reps about this.

I live right across the river in Arkansas and I am counting the days down, if no locals by next year then I am gone either to DTV or TimeWarner. I have patiently been waiting for 2 years! I have e-mailed some with the program directors and engineers and the last thing I heard in December was that dish was searching for a headend site for the signals. I am keeping my fingers cross that it will be soon!
