Now that versus is gone On directv and not sure when it will be back.

I am interesting in dish So I have some questions. I have been directv customer for years and I own my own equipment so I can shutdown as I please.

I have 3 dish receivers I found in the trash 311 and 301 no cards in them
can I use these as I own them if not is there a way to own equipment and have dish without any commitment

If I can use them how do I test them

Also can suspend your account for a period of time without any fee.

Reason being I spend time a way from home and travel so I have been doing this for years. I also have those east coast west coast channels.
thank you
why direct why Versus

I don't know of any way to test them with no cards or sat dish other than plugging them in and seeing if they power up. But that still doesn't tell you much.

That said, I think that if you look at the Dish site, you'll see that the offers for new subscribers would most likely be cheaper than getting those connected, buy the cards and have an install done. You'd need to ask Dish about that.

I believe you can suspend your account for 'vacation' or some such. But if you're on a contract, the time your suspended doesn't count towards your committment. I believe that Direct has something similar.

If by east/west coast channels you are talking about the broadcast channels, Dish doesn't have that at all. There is a 3rd party that will supply them via Dish's satellites, but you have to qualify for distant networks. I know Direct offers them, but they require qualifying also.

I would suggest that you call Dish and ask them about the deals, and the other questions you might have.

If you're on a commitment, you cannot suspend your account with Dish period.

ok how do I sign up without a commitment.
I had to call them cause I know from pass exp with other providers.
They tell one thing and when you call back months later they that person should have not said that and we can't do that and there is no why to prove what you have even if you have name and employee id time and date.

I had a 1 yr comm with direct before which I did not sign up for and had to pay

You may not own those DISH receivers, DISH may own them and you found them in the trash because the previous renter found they couldn't be used. All 3 need new G3(purple cards) which are supposed to be going for $65 ea. The 301/311 only has power on and up down buttons on front of receivers so you will need remotes to do much of anything with them. On the back is a R00# call DISH and give them the 3 R00#s they will be able to tell you if they are leased or have an outstanding balance that must be paid.

To test them you can connect them to a working DISH system and see what they display.

You can sign up online without committment, but you won't get the really good deals as a new sub that way.

Are the 301s/311s mpeg4 receivers? If he's looking for HD. Can't imagine watching Versus and being satisfied with a SD picture :)

AFAIK only the VIP IRDs are mpeg4.

With one minor exception*, you are correct: only ViP-series receivers are MPEG4/HD compatible.

* The exception is that the ViP211 was the first MPEG4 receiver Dish released, but the first run of those receivers were called 411s. Someone in Dish's Marketing department decided to change the name of the MPEG4 receivers, so 411s became ViP211s and all other MPEG4 receivers have been ViP receivers from the start. The only difference between a 411 and a ViP211 is the name.

The 411 does not have an ethernet adapter, otherwise it is the same as the ViP211.

Question, I too i'm thinking about making the move to Dish from DirecTV. If I do, other then getting a new a dish and receivers, can they use the same wires so they won't have to drill any new holes??

90% of the time you could use the same wires/holes/dish location but there would always be some situations that would require something different. As long as you have ONE coax run from the dish to each receiver location and the current dish location can see 110º, 119º, and 129º sat locations, you're good. You could have some SWM setup for DirecTV that feeds multiple receivers "inside" the house that could be a problem.

Investigate ClubDISH as a new subscriber. I don't know what the current new sub offer is, but it used to save you $30 using ClubDISH and the DISH sub that gives the "referral" gets 10 $5 credits. Find a family member, co-worker, neighbor that subscribes to DISH have have them give you the ClubDISH referral. If it is their 1st referral, they get some PPV coupons too.

My current set up with DirecTV is 2 DVRs and 2 HD receivers. I have 2 cables going into each DVR and 1 cable for each HD receiver.

I never thought it would come to this, (and I love DirecTV) but I need VERSUS! And also that NEW NFL Red Zone channel (that DirecTV won't have) sounds interesting also!

When I switched from D* to E*, the installer used the same cables, D* had run 2 RG6 to each location and a phone line (got a VIP install) so it was very easy to install. Only thing that took time was the tech having to get a DPPTwin LNB from the shop, the 3 in his truck were all bad!

You didn't say what DISH setup you were shooting for, but cables and holes would be much less of a problem that the limit of 4 leased Outputs, and that DISH has a charge PER DVR. You could get two 722s and feed the SD TVs off the 2nd output of the HD DVRs, but that alone constitutes 4 leased Outputs. A 612 is a two tuner, single HD DVR leaving you two leased Outputs but you may run into "sharing issues" if those current DVRs are both used to having two tuners each. I guess 4 612s might work for you - only you will know.

If you are looking long term why the hangup about no contract? If you go DHA-24 on dish you'll get a housefull of free equipment and the $15 off for a year.
