I'm looking at picking up a 2nd dish for long camping weekends and tailgating. I've had one offered to me, but its been reported that there is a crack in the white plastic LNB cover. I don't have any pictures yet or the crack, but what are the potential issues with crack in the cover?

The main thing I was thinking is water leakage into the LNB, however, this won't be my permanent ODU. It will only be used for temporary reception when needed.

Could/would a crack in the cover cause any signal degradation/loss issues?

Dont' waste your money on an LNB that will be flakey over the long run.

A cracked cover says that water has compromised the internal circuitry of the LNB and the clock is ticking for the LNB to fail. A subset of Murphy's Law says that it will fail at the most inopportune time, which will likely occur after you have treked 10 hours to your wilderness retreat and are setting up to watch some event that is important to you.

Signal wise you won't see any degradation until a few seconds before the LNB fails totally.

Actually, the description I get wasn't correct. It's not the LNB cover that is cracked, but the shield about the 99/101/103 LNB.

If it was the face of the LNB cover, I'd be concerned. This looks purely cosmetic.

I have an issue putting out $100 or more for a brand new dish setup, that is going to be in my shed 355 days a year. For $25, I think this will serve me fine.

That shield is to help prevent the LNB from icing over in snow/sleet. It's likely not going to be an issue for you.

When it does crack and it will, clear silicone works great to reseal it. My neighbors fell off completely. We put a disposable plastic cup over it and siliconed it down. Been working for 2 years.

If you dont and its cold and warm dew will collect in it and it will fail within a few months. Other neighbor had that happen.
