View Full Version : confusion over sat 119

I have had a couple different problems in the last couple months.
2 H20s that lose the guide every week or so and need to be reset
an HR20 that gives me a message every so often that it hasn't received any guide info and reboots every so often
and a new to me HR22 that gets an error on the self test.
all receivers work.
I have good signals on everything except 119 which I have all zeroes.
I have all my channels I'm supposed to have
Monday night I saw a message here that someone had trees blocking the way. I thought that could be my problem because after about 12 years of 3 dish versions in the same place my tree window has grown smaller.
So I cut some branches and made a bigger hole apparently for the 99 sat because those signals got stronger. still no 119.
Now I'm reading different places that maybe the 119 sat is only sending the guide but that the guide is available on other sats too.
I'm In Charlotte NC so I don't know if that's all I get off the guide.
I can tweak my realignment pretty easily but not sure how big a problem I have.
Looking for someone who knows more than me to weigh in.

119 isn't needed for most people, unless your SD locals happen to come from there, as the HD channels that used to be there have been mirrored to 99/103 in Mpeg4. There is still Chinese and Spanish sd programing there.
You could definitely try trimming some trees to get your 119 back. If your trimming improved your 99 signal you were a bit off in the area you were trimming.
www.dishpointer.com can help figure out where you need to trim.
A simpler alternative is to swap to a SL3 lnb. Assuming you have a slimline dish already you can just undo a couple bolts, slide the lnb out, disconnect the cable, and reconnect everything and slide in the new lnb.

thanks Evan
Dish Pointer seems to indicate trimming trees of my neighbor's pretty high up. I should have included I have a 5LNB Slimline mounted about 9 feet high on the side of my house.

You can buy a 3 LNB to replace your 5 LNB it just bolts on and with careful replacement may not need any tuning.:)

In the interim, leave your tuners on any SD channel overnight, they will then gather guide data from the 101.
Yes;
Your problem is that a SlimLine-5 LNB receives it's program guide and other authorization data from the 119 satellite (DIRECTV-7S) when you are viewing programming from the 103 satellite (usually for national HD programming from DIRECTV-10). Therefore if you spend a considerable amount of time viewing programming from the 103 satellite position the receivers have no way of accessing any guide or authorization data if your 119 LNB is blocked.
Therefore switch to a SlimLine-3 LNB which remains connected to the 101 satellite group for it's program guide/authorization information even when selecting the 103 satellites.

Ok I just ordered a new LNB from solid signal. 50% off.
Hopefully it does it.
Progress is funny, I spent a bit of time a couple years ago aligning the dish to hit all 5 sats and now find out I only need to see 3.
Sigh.
Thanks for the help guys

Hope you ordered a Slimline 3 LNB,You will need to rerun the guided setup for Slimline 3 as well.:)

I haven't received the SL3LNB yet but yesterday for grins I set one of my H20s to an SL3LNB with the 5LNB still installed. I wanted to make sure Sunday Ticket was ok and it was.
I lost the HD channels from 70 into the 80s. I guess those are the legacy channels and I do get them elsewhere.
I did notice that I am missing guide data for things like HBO and ESPN.
Will those be populated properly when I install the 3LNB hardware?

should have said HBO HD and ESPN HD. I can view the channels but there's no guide data

Yes it should.

The 70-series HD channels come from 110 and 119, so you will lose them when you go to a 3LNB. But they are all duplicated on higher channels in mpeg4.
Telling a receiver you have a 3LNB when you really have a 5LNB (or vice-versa) will cause improper guide data reception (or lack of reception), as the two LNB's use different stack plans to provide guide data.

Strange;
The transponder map has both those feeds on DIRECTV-11 at 99 WL, therefore the receiver should have simultaneous access to the 101 slot for guide data. I could understand this happening if they were on 103. Don't no what to say...
Of course I guess I should add that unless you are viewing a channel on the 103 satellite while checking the guide for ESPN-HD and HBO-HD's programming would explain the lack of data for them when the LNB selection is intentionally set wrong this way. :)

I got the new LNB and installed it. I would have loved to have had the pigtails before. Wow what a way to make it easy! One of those simple ideas that you slap your head about. I could have made my own duh.
