My HD monitor of choice, the Panasonic 53" RPTV, model PT53WX42 with 2 component ins, has just evolved into the model PT53WX52. The main determinable improvement on the video side is the addition of a DVI-I input.

So now I am presented with a conundrum. Should I stay on plan and buy the PT53WX42 with component ins, or pay an extra $100 for the PT53WX52 with DVI connect and a few other 'improvements', most of which I don't need or want.

I read somewhere recently that DVI may not be the protocol for long, but I am not going to keep upgrading my video ad infinitum. When I get to HD, whether it's component or DVI connects, I will probably plateau at that level of technology with respect to my video.

I would appreciate getting the opinions of knowledgeable members on whether I should go component or DVI at this point in time.

If the difference is only $100, then I say go for it. For that extra money you'll have both component and DVI plus some other 'improvements'. It's nice to have the extra hook-up options. You may find DVI useful in the future.

"other" improvements for the Panasonic PT53WX52:

1. screen protector - don't want it, prefer the non-reflective lenticular screen
2. 2 more internal speakers & 5 add'l watts out - don't need it, using HT audio system
3. 'silver' cabinet - don't like it, whoever thought that was a good idea?
4. "New CRT(s) and chassis" - can't asses it, no comparative specs

If it is a DVI-HDCP, which I'm sure it is, then I say go for it. This all digital connection is even better than using component. No digital to analog and back to digital signal degradation. There are two DVD players just released on the market with DVI out, and the ability to put out at 720p or 1080i, and the picture has been incredible. As well as new HD boxes that will utilize DVI as well.

My next HD set will hopefully have at least 2 DVI inputs. The big problem now is, most only have one, and DVI switchers are real expensive and not that great.

Go for DVI. I've seen net prices under $30. All the demos at the shows use DVI whenever possible (even DVI to component, if the display doesn't have DVI). There's gotta be a reason. :righton:

Definitely get the DVI. There are rumors that future settop boxes will not support TVs without DVI inputs for copy protection reasons. It still is only a POSSIBLE problem, but this will ensure that you are safe.
