How does one receive directv aboard a moveing airplane? I thought the dish has to remain in a locked posistion

It is on a gyro. When the plane makes sudden moves the signal is lost for a second. Really awesome system, however.

I flew from Salt Lake to New York and back on JetBlue last year and the Directv service made the 5-hour flight much more enjoyable. It only lost signal for a second or two.

There are systems like this available for RV's that will track a satellite while in motion & are extremely accurate. They run about $2k and are housed inside a dome atop an RV.

Are you sure they are gyro stabilized? There are phased array antennas out there too. No moving parts is a big advantage over physically aligned dishes.

For a visual reference, here's one company that offers what looks like traditional dishes in a dome, and "flat" phased array "dish" for car
