View Full Version : Columbus-Tupelo-West Point, MS locals are ACTIVE
To all:
The Columbus-Tupelo-West Point, MS locals are now verified to be ACTIVE. :glasses:
For those living in this TV market, you should see the following channels:
CW2 WMAB PBS Mississippi State (Ch. mapped to MS ETV flagship station WMPN in Jackson)
CW4 WCBI CBS Columbus
CW9 WTVA NBC Tupelo
CW27 WLOV FOX West Point
CW45 WKDH ABC Houston, MS
Remember that you have a 30 day free trial of the locals if you live in this market.
ENJOY!! :D
For those with new receivers, the channels are 2, 4, 9, 27, and 45, respectively.
Foe those with old receivers, the channels are in the 927-933 range.
Hmmm...According to the D* press release, the PBS station is a national feed.
Anyone know WHY there would be a national feed of PBS when there is a MS PBS affiliate near Mississippi State?
I'm confused!

I don't know if it's national PBS or not, you'll have to check, since I can't see them. They must be spotbeamed, because my old receiver can see all the new locals except them.
ChrisPC,
I had to have the installer return to reaim Mom's dish. Because of mixup, he came this morning, which he got correctly aligned this time. I had him check where the locals are while he was there. Except for PBS, they are on transponder 4, which is a spotbeam centered in Memphis. There was some confusion about PBS, so I didn't bother him with it. I know a little more about transponder mapping than he does.
I will be talking with Mom tonight to determine exactly what the story is with the PBS. More specifically, I will find out what transponder that Ch. 2 resides on and whether or not Mississippi specific shows air on it. This should tell me whether or not it is the national feed.
D* press center says national feed of PBS on Ch. 2
D* web site local channels check says WMAE Ch. 12 from Boonevile. This is not correct as PBS pulls from Ch. 2
Msguy reports that program guide shows it as WMAB Ch. 2 from Mississippi State, which is what I would expect it to be.
Apparently, several of the departments at D* are not communicating well.

Yeah, they don't communicate well, Jackson locals didn't show up as available on channel 999 for a month after they were on!
The Memphis beam sounds about right, half the Memphis DMA is in MS, and adjacent to the Columbus DMA. I can get the Memphis beam at 100 here in SW MS, so I'm sure it covers Columbus and Tupelo.
If you want to know if the PBS is remapped, just ask her if it has the little tilted "E" ETV logo! It shouldn't be on 4 anyway, it should be on 6 if it's the same as Jackson. All the Jackson and Shreveport locals are on transponder 6, except for the Jackson Fox feed, which is on 19. BTW, how is her signal now?
ChrisPC,
Thanks for the suggestion about checking for the E logo. I forgot about that.
She now gets 88 or better on all the CONUS transponders. The dude got it right. He also found a short in the cable from receiver to TV in the bedroom. He earned his pay today.

Great, that sounds like the two guys who came and installed mine. They really knew their stuff.
Msguy,
What is the guide saying now about the PBS station? It appears to be the national feed of PBS, according to information gathered from Mom. It is mapped to CW2, though. The regular channel number is 384, according to the information I gathered. It's bizarre that they didn't map into the Jackson PBS station.
If PBS the National Feed is coming in on Columbus-Tupelo Locals. It will be much different because PBS Here in Mississippi is Called Mississippi E. Mississippi E Tv is what it's called. They have alot of Local State content sometimes like Mississippi outdoors and programs like that. It'll be a little different indeed. If they carry Mississippi E Tv just about all the Mississippi E stations like Channel 12 in Booneville and Channel 2 Mississippi state All carry the same programming throughout the state.

Maybe they didn't map it because Jackson is moving to 119 and Columbus/Tupelo is staying at 101.
Columbus, MS locals do use the national feed. The channel is mapped to channel position 2, but is pulled from 101 TP 15, which should mean that is mapped to ch. 384.
I guess there are problems at the LRF getting either the Mississippi State or Booneville station. I would think that MS ETV would work with D* to get the Mississippi programming on board.
They are gonna have to do something with Channel 9 WTVA- Channel 27 WLOV- and Channel 45 WKDH The Columbus - Tupelo Networks all with the exception of WCBI Channel 4 and Mississippi E Tv leave there Channel Logo's on the screen continuous even through the commercials. I wish they'd take them off. Channel 9 WTVA leaves there little Channel 9 with the Circle Logo over the 9 on the bottom right hand of the screen All the time like I said earlier even through commercials. I wonder If I e-mailed WTVA about this if they would do something. I think it's really annoying having both the NBC Network Peacock at the bottom of the screen also with the channel logo. Anyone in the Tupelo-Columbus viewing area share the same thought?
I emailed the director of engineering to get advanced word on the locals. It may help.
The same holding company controls all three stations, so you should see if there is a chief of programming who is the same person at all three stations.
What do the advertisers think about the station logo "messing up" their ads?
I wonder...
Channel 9 has had there channel logo at the bottom right hand of the screen for a number of years now. WLOV Fox 27 and WKDH ABC 45 leave the Channel Number and Call Letters on the Screen the whole time. I am seriously considering e-mailing one of those stations probably WTVA. I don't know if it will do any good but leaving them on even DURING Commercials is going to the extreme now!!
Go for it!
Hey, those of us here on the Satellite Forums convinced TNN (now Spike TV) to drop the black bar at the bottom. You never know what might happen.

I hate the fact the WTVA/WLOV/WKDH leaves their logos up all the time. This is one reason I began to watch Memphis channels when they were avalible on my cable system. The stations would be much more appealing to watch if they would not even use the logos.
Just another note, WCBI used to keep their logo up as well. Only it was much smaller and was in the upper right hand corner. Thankfully, WCBI removed the logo a few months ago.
It amazes me that one company controls 3 of 4 TV stations in a single TV market. Sounds like something Clear Channel would love to be involved in, though I know they are not. BTW, I am also surprised that Direct saw fit to provide LIL in a very small market such as Tupelo/Columbus at this time. Both Direct and Dish just recently added my market which has more than twice as many households and far more serious OTA reception problems.

I was also surprised that the Tupelo market was added as well. But, It was a good move for D*. A very high percentage of the citizens in the market have D* and not to mention that most of the cable companies SUCK. I believe D* will pick up many customers because of this move.
The biggest reason (in my opinion) that the Columbus/Tupelo channels are on D* is the proximity to Memphis. There are only 6 Memphis channels on D*. This left enough room to get the Columbus/Tupelo stations online. But, one thing puzzles me, the Memphis/Tupelo beam only gets a 70 signal strength at my house in Itawamba County. The Nashville/Huntsville/Birmingham beam(s) get a 100 at my house. Go Figure!!!
I was surprised when these channels were not put on the Birmingham beam.
Many Many Folks living in the Tupelo and Columbus Market have Direc Tv because as Ole Miss Guy stated the Cable Systems Mainly Comcast Cable SUCK! Bottom Line. I am tickled to death that Tupelo WTVA Channel 9 is Finally available on Satellite and There are no Glitches or Lines that sometimes run through the television screen even on Cable this would happen. Not On Direc Tv. The Picture is superb. Much better than Cable or Over The Freakin Air!!!! Bye The way For National Content Memphis is better because they don't Clutter up the screen with there channel Logo's on constantly. But For Local News WTVA Channel 9 is better for me than Memphis. In my opinion even more folks now in this area will probably turn to Direc Tv now because Local Channels are Finally Available in the Northeast Mississippi viewing area. Goodbye Comcast cable!!!!!
