Tried to get directv about a year ago, but no drill rule at apt killed that.
Now going to try again:
1) I 'need' 2 hd-dvrs, and would want a SWM install, is there any way to 'force' the defualt to a SWM dish? (say I add an extra reciver, but never have it installed/ return it right away.? would that cost me more?)
2) I could get it install on my house roof, (single story ranch, some trees in front, but looking at dishpointer, with the dish being aimed to the right I should be ok. I do have a detached garage, that could be used for the install, its futher back, so I know there are know for sure nothing would get in the way now, or in the future. But would the installer put it there? Or would that be to 'custom' of an install.
3) outside the one free hd-dvr, is it possible to get the 2nd at reduced cost?
Thanks again for any help. Moving from u-verse because the HD on live events is crappy, and with current promos, I belive I can get d-tv cheaper.

1) At one point, the SWM was reserved for new customers with 5 tuners IIRC. Lately there has been rumors that the requirements for SWM have been relaxed, but it depends on your area. A tech that I talked to recently told me of the relaxed requirements, but also did not have them here.
2) The detached building will definitely fall into custom work since the cables would need to be buried in between. The only way to know for sure about LOS is to let the installer check it for you.
3) I'm not sure about the equipment deals for new customers. You can always call DTV or a local retailer to find out.
Hope some of this helps.

The SWM requirements have not *yet* been relaxed. There are rumors of a change coming in the next couple of months, but nothing official.
The current rules are still:
- New customers ONLY (no upgrades or Mover's)
- At least 1 HD receiver
- No International programming
- Between 5-8 tuners.

So if I order 2 hd-dvrs, and a standard reciver and then dont have the tech install the the standard reciever, would DTV have a fit?

Only the tech can answer that. He would have to be made aware of the change before starting the work. He gets paid by the number of lines run and wouldn't get paid for the extra run if all recievers on the work order are not activated.

My parents had DTV installed last winter.
1 HD DVR and 1 HD STB. They installed a SWM dish. Not sure why, the tech ran new cable for both boxes.

I wouldn't make him do the extra run. And a tip migth be in order.
But would if I placed that order with DTV would I get a SWM, or is it still hit or miss?

Im not sure if this would work or not but I just thought I would post it. If your already getting the one HD DVR you could add three standard receivers. That would put you at 5 tuners and each of the standard receivers would be free. Then if the installer is required to activate them you can just deactivate them later. Then you wouldnt lose anything and just send the receivers you dont need back. technically this would qualify you for an SWM install. It is possible that they might just use a legacy multiswitch if your only get one HD DVR.
Otherwise if you want a second HD DVR that would probably be $199. If you want a second HD receiver that would be $99. Also an SD DVR would also be $99. You could possible get a discount on two HD DVRs if you say your comming from uverse. Just say that your used being able to record 4 shows at once. But with the standard receivers you can get up to 4 free as far as I can remember.
