I've also noticed that vod programs doesn't seem to take up HDD space or add avail space when a program is deleted... Anyone know know why??

If you download a VOD from one of the VOD channels, that will use up your recording space. When DirecTV was using the MoviesNow tab and forced VOD movies onto your receiver, those were stored in the reserved area of the drive and did not affect your recording space.

I think they still use the reserved area for some VOD titles. The ones with the green check mark are already stored on your hard drive. Anything else has to be downloaded.

Regardless, it doesn't reduce the size of the user area of the drive.

To clarify, there is a portion of the hard drive reserved exclusively for DirecTV's use. It has absolutely no affect on the space you record to and will not affect your avaiable space percentages.

To go one step further:
If "you" download a VOD, it does take up "your space", but if it's already downloaded [from the SAT feed], then it doesn't.

Isn't that what I said?!? :)

Maybe I am confused but if DirecTV is reserving space for VOD on a limited space hard drive that absolutely has to impact the space you record to. If DirecTV does not reserve that space you have more room.

I don't use VOD and never will and would much prefer DirecTV let me opt-out and use that space.

ALL HR2x have ALWAYS had 100 gigs for "their use".
All specs for hours of recording have reflected this.
If you want more space, you can add a eSATA [which will also "save" 100 gigs for their use].

They do take up space, just not very much.

In my experience the quality of the SD content seems to vary widely, and I am pretty sure they are really cranking up the compression to make the downloads as small as possible. (They still look relatively good, though, since they aren't having to be compressed on the fly or multiplexed with 10 other SD channels.)

As stated, if you download a VOD movie/show it will use up space just like recording a show from the Guide. If the movie is forced to your DVR, such as the old MoviesNow content, it is stored in the reserved area and has no effect to the amount of recording space available to the user.
