Sorry to do this, but I have been searching and haven't found the answer I was hoping to.
I understand DirecTV's rules for SWM installations, but I do have a details question on that. I know that I have to have:
• New customers only.
• At least 1 HD receiver.
• 5-8 tuners total.
• No International programming.
I will qualify on all of those, but in getting to the 5-8 tuners, I was going to do:
1 HDDVR (the free one with sign-up),
1 HDDVR (from Costco because they are cheaper than from DTV) and
1 HD Receiver.
That gets me to 5 tuners. Does the one I get from Costco qualify towards the 5 tuners or do I need to add 2 more receivers somehow?
Also, if the installer shows up and is not going to install the SWM dish, can I turn him away and say that is not the install I want? I guess what I am asking is when will I be locked into the DTV contract? Is it upon installation or after I call and set up the appointment? If they aren't going to do it SWM, I am going to keep my existing Time Warner connection and wait on DirecTV. (I know, it's asinine, but there are certain things you do when your wife demands it :) )

Your order will not have the tuners because they cannot add a receiver that you have to the initial order at the time of the order. You will have to pay an installation fee for that receiver wich will be more than the $30 savings at Costco.
If you want the best chance to get a SWM then order everything through them it will be better for you in the long run. You can call after you place the order and see if a SWM is on the order. However since you want specific equipment your best option is a local dealer, as long as they're reputable, and tell them exactly what you want. They're more apt to work with you on equipment needs, not price, to get the sale.
I should also state that if you do call and a SWM was not on the order there is nothing that can be done by the person who you talk to to change it.

YOu're contract goes into effect when the tech calls the computer to activate.
But without a line item for ' install customer IRD ' the tech will not install your box since he won't get paid to do so.
Dead presidents help a lot though even though it seems there are still techs who don't know or claim not to know SWM.

Here in Surprise (Phoenix Market) I simply ordered 1 regular receiver and 1 HD DVR and they gave me a 3lnb SWM system. I have since moved and added a SD DVR (R16 - ugg) using the movers connection thingy. The R16 isnt getting a sat signal, thats for another thread, so I called and chatted with a CSR last night while I waited for the SD DVR to reboot. She said that SWM's are becoming more of the norm now with the HR-22's and 23's series our there.
Unsure of your location, but I have read on here that SWM is becoming more of the standard, if not standard, in some areas. It allows for easier install, so Ive read; allows for the use of the pre-installed single coax already run in most houses for 2 tuner DVRs.

Correct;
And to add that unless you DIY the best chance of getting a SWiMLNB install in your situation is to initially order two HD-DVRs and an HD receiver, and purchase the HD-DVR from Costco. Shortly after the installation deactivate one of the HD-DVRs and return it for credit and then activate the Costco one. This will obviously cost you more money temporarily plus the slight hassle of returning a HD-DVR, but is your surest bet of securing a SWiMLNB installation beyond a DIY'er job.

I think this will cost more money period. I don't believe D* will refund up-front lease fees on the returned receiver.

Nope; no credit for activated receivers.

Correct;
My bad... since DirecTV would obviously lose all kinds of money on lease fees for the receivers by people exploiting such a loophole :sure:
