Wishful thinking. I'm sure it's due to all the DRM crap.
But..., if D* did run Bonjour on the set-top-boxes, they could provide an awesome iPhone remote app. Similar to how the Apple Remote iPhone app works. That would be a dream come true.

...and, if DIRECTV did run Bonjour, there would be so much network overhead that it would be impossible to run a smooth HD stream over wireless.

Bonjour probably isn't as "chatty" as you might think. I have around 12 Bonjour devices on my network, and regularly stream 720p over wireless-N to an AppleTV, and have never seen an issue. Granted, it's not full 1080p.

I run a mixed Mac and PC network at work. I know precisely how chatty Bonjour can be.

Then shame on me for even mentioning such foolishness.

I'm guessing you're talking about the announcements? If so, I'm pretty sure devices can be configured to announce far less often than things like AFP or ARD. Even then, do you really think a couple packets would have even a slightly negligible impact on serving video? uPnP (which is what DTV2PC uses right now) sends out announcements at regular intervals as well.
You'd be seeing the same traffic.

Wha? If that's the case, there are other issues on your network...
