My series 2 tivo is on its last legs at just about the time I'm going to be switching to cable (for awhile...a long story). Here's my question: I own the HDVR2, but once it no longer is connected to the satellite, will I still be able to view the recorded programs?

Thanks, Steve

I sure would like to know if you make this work.

I have the same machine (Hughes HDVR2) and once I disconnected it from the satellite cables (when I upgraded to a HD DVR), it worked for a while (a day or two) then gave me an error which had something to do with its inability to authorize or something like that (I don't remember the exact message).

The CSR I talked to said that the machine(s) have to receive an authorization signal via satellite every day or so or they'll just shut down.

Some folks have said that they can run their machines without satellite hookup for long periods of time without problem, so I have to wonder if it's only specific machines, or specific firmware releases?

For me, I resolved the problem by paying an 'additional receiver' fee ($5/month) which allow me to watch live TV and record shows using this receiver as well - so I'm also using it as a back-up to my replacement HD DVR.

ive never heard of that on the legacy equipment. i have a philliips DSR tivo that i got at a garage sale a few years back with the intention of using it but never did. the guy who had it before me still had recorded programming on it and i can still play it to this day and it hasnt been connected to a DTV dish in years
