To get a break on ordering Internet service from the cable company without buying a lot of cable service, see if the cable company will sell you "Basic-Only" service and the Internet service.

The local service will give you all the local channels(and probably a few others like local access and such) for a price that's maybe around $12-14 a month. While that's more than what you'd pay for "local channels" via the dish, the local channels could be available on all your outlets while you decide which TV(s) would have satellite access too.

Cable wants customers. If the cable CSR does not have a deal for you, ask to speak with a supervisor or the manager.

I have also investigated getting Internet service via satellite and a local satellite guy I asked about it told me it's not ready for home usage yet. It needs to be tightly tweaked and there's no room for error.

I tried asking Comcast about that. My basic cable service is $17/mo (but that isn't including all of the taxes and fees). My Cable Modem service is $56/mo, but it would be $42/mo if I had cable tv. The difference would be that I would being paying about $3/mo for basic service. So it just does't work out for me yet.

In the Boston market to get the internet discount with cable you have buy mutiple tier service at the rate of about 45.00 to save 15 bucks on the two. I was thinking i would get the basic and drop dish locals but no such luck. so i went with digital phone instead to get the discount.

If you have a PVR from Dish, you can't record local stations if you receive them via cable. That is the show-stopper for me
