Hi guys, I have a directivo from samsung (2003) and was wanting to know if it is possible to take the hard drive from my other box (phillips DSR708) and use it in the samsung with the software already on the one from phillips?

Thanks.

PS the phillips no longer works, only the hard drive does.

Doubtful. Even if the Tivo software images were compatible, you would need to perform a "Clear and Delete Everything" before the "new" Tivo could use that drive. You won't hurt anything by trying, though.

The big key will be if the software on the two units are compatible. Good luck,

I've also moved this thread to the legacy receiver area as these are not Plus DVR models. (Left a move marker to help people find it.)

Cheers,
Tom

He would definitely need to do a "Clear and Delete Everything" after swapping the drives, but it is very likely it would work just fine. The Samsung and Philips DSR708 are both Series 2 DirecTivos, so the software is compatible.

You might want to post this over in the "Tivo community" bb. They have a D* Tivo sub-forum. You'll find more folks who still use DTivos there. I asked a similar question there a while ago, and the gist of the response is that the drive can be used, but there's no way to recover the programs you had recorded before on a stock software install.
