Am really getting tired at D* for sending out crappy HD receivers. Have just replaced my 3rd receiver since June. They are all refurbished, but that just means their "quality" control check fails miserably.

Where are your HD boxes located / Is there enough ventilation.
How is the power supply in the house? Have brown-outs?
How many devices are on the same circuit?

What exactly is happening to them? Same thing each time?

Where are your HD boxes located 2 were in living room, 1 in bedroom/ Is there enough ventilation.Yes, not enclosed, nothing on top of them, or on side
How is the power supply in the house? No problem in 6 years Have brown-outs?None here
How many devices are on the same circuit?TV, Tivo, Direct

What exactly is happening to them? Same thing each time? Nope, different things, One was high HD channels not appearing, was not the BBC; Another was receiver had no power; Today it was LNB output. LNB's on dish receiving power, changed receiver, works fine now.

Other electronics in house, no problems.

That really is a run of bad luck! All mine came in less than a second.:)

I've had 3 HD DVRs and one HD receiver for 3 years and not had a failure (other than one hit by lightning (along with $13,000 of other equipment that day). That one was replaced with a refurbished HR20-700 and it has worked flawlessly for two years.

All of my stuff is well cooled and on UPSs.

I've had some issues with refurbs when my 2 hr20's were replaced.

How is your dish grounded? Could you post some pics for us?

It would have been nice if the OP had mentioned the model numbers of the receivers. :)

So two of your problems appear to be signal related. Have you had DirecTV replace the LNB on your dish or replace the dish itself? I'd be looking at the dish/LNB as the source of most of your problems (obviously not the receiver with no power). I had similar problems about 3 years ago, was a bad LNB.

No power was H20 refurb. Returned on June 23, 2009.
Higher HD channels not coming in was a H21 refurb. Receiver arrived with this "defect". Tech replaced LNB's, but said it was the receiver. Returned on July 9, 2009.
LNB Output Failed was an H20 refurb. Tech checked LNB, they were good. Waiting for recovery box, again...

I had a tech out recently that told me that for every one refurb they take out, they have to sign out 2 extras in case the one doesn't work. That tells me that refurbs are not all checked out before going out. Jabil is clearly not doing their job.

I even had a tech support CSR tell me about the NEW customer that was left with a receiver without a cover on it and that the tech thought nothing of it.

Definitely does not look good or professional.

I received two reconditioned hr22s from directv and then picked up a new one from best buy. No issues with any since June. Hard drives seem to have no bad sectors or issues.

Go buy a $99 leased HD receiver from Best Buy. They will be Brand New in the Box and you will have a new 2 year lease but atleast you will have new equipment and you will be good to go. I bought a new one back in June from them and I found it to be better than waiting for DirecTv to send me one in the mail via FedEx. I'm already 3 months into my new 2 year committment but atleast the equipment is good and not refurbished. All you have to do is call DirecTv and tell them you are replacing a defective refurbished receiver they sent you have them deactivate the refurbised receiver and have them activate your new purchased receiver and your problem will be solved. They will probably send you a box to send them back the HD refurbished receiver. I know. I have 4 of them myself and went through in June what you are going through now in September.

Why would I give more money to Direct or Best Buy? I've already paid them $99 for the leased HD, and I expect them to replace their defective boxes with working models. I did request a trade, my current HD for a reg DVR. They said sure, for $99. No thanks.

Incidentally, I have another receiver (an HD DVR HR20) and its been working just fine. Its these H20 refurbs that seem to fail. The last 2 techs have checked the dish, and wiring, and they can't locate any potential problems.

I've received a refurbished H21 using hearts program on DTV website (free receiver). I knew I'd get a refurb but so far so good. It's working great with no issues.

I did go through several HR20-100 DVRs when I updated my system a couple of years ago from SD to HD. But after a couple of tech visits, I finally got two working units that are still running.
