I'm not at home right now to check this out. Could someone clarify? I'm not really understanding what this is. Thank you.
Until now, you could only get LOT8's on the SD weather channel. Now you can get it on the HD weather channel. This is very good news.

About time!
Formatted for HD but definately not HD-quality graphics. Still it is local info which is what "Local on 8s" is all about. Now to get a better looking radar image. :scratchin

Yeah they look like TWC graphics from the 90's. I wish they'd "zoom in" the radar more (like the cable version) but I can get that with a local digital subchannel instead.

I agree that they are not HD-quality graphics but I did compare the SD to the HD local on the 8's and the HD channel one does have slightly high resolution graphics then the SD one. They do need a better font though.

I''m getting Local on the 8's in HD. Looks like a copy of the SD version.
It’s not an exact copy of the SD version because the HD one has slightly high resolution graphics and notice the SD one has a cloud background and the HD doesn't, its background matches the national local on the 8's HD background.
Unable to test. Sat through 5 minutes of commercials and gave up, not worth it.
Channel is Unwatchable, way to many commercials!
Looks like I am getting it just fine for my area. Looks Awesome way to go D* :joy:....

...got it here in SE VA. Very cool! :D It looks like the former LO8 HD (National) started to run, then it shifted in the zip code data. Nice! As a 'weather' person, this is something I had missed from our cable days.

..ok...got it....had to re-boot the one in the bedroom and now it also gets the LOT8. I also pressed the green button (clear) when it asked me before the LOT8 if I wanted local weather. Not sure, but I suspect the re-boot did the trick.

Too bad it doesn't work for me. I get the offer about the red button and I am programmed with my zipcode in there but it's not showing locals on the 8's. It' just shows what it alsways has.
I just rebooted earlier today, so I'm not sure that is it.
**EDIT**
Well I guess I rebooted earlier today before they turned this on because I rebooted again and now it works.

The only difference I see; the SD version has area radars to end "On The 8's", where the HD version has maps showing other stats.

You know it! It's not like I can go to my computer, mobile phone, game console, DirecTV tuner, etc, and get the same information at anytime I want to see it. Yes, it's much better to wait for when a TV network says I should see it. They know what's best for me.

I Agree that Local Radar is now the big big thing they need to work on. But this is awesome news! Been waiting a long time for this one..
They could even do local weather perhaps over the network for those with their receivers hooked up. Would be great!

Along with a better radar image, I wish there was a way they could use the text version of the forecasts. The images they show now for the local area don't tell the whole story..also weather warnings would be nice.

Yeah that regional radar page is useless. It spans from Texas to Florida and Atlanta (where I am) is almost at the top.
All I had to do to turn it on was hit the red button and enter my home zip.

It does now (at least the SD version has), when there's been a weather warning for my zip code you get a tone and a pop up saying to press the red button to get to the active application for more details on the warning.

We've had this on SD for a year or so and I was hoping to see an upgraded radar by now. In fact, an e-mail I received from TWC said they were working on an upgrade and expected it this year. The radar is just too low-res to be of much use. I realize that cable head-ends need equipment to pull off the localized radar but it doesn't seem impossible for satellite. Why not allow users to opt-in if they want the better radar and download a hi-res version to their DVR's? Then, when Local on the 8's come on, you'd be served the last radar that was downloaded to your DVR? It doesn't seem too far fetched to make it animated, either. It just seems to me there's been time to get this improved and get something on DirecTV comparable to cable. Sure, there are other sources: local channels, the Internet, etc. But I pay for TV and it's one of the services I expect to be included. The radar, in my estimation, is very disappointing. They can do better, and they should have by now.
I kinda like the national 'On The 8s' . Great graphics packages used - there are a billion other local weather sources not on TV. They should have left the HD national one alone until they came up with better local ones like they have on cable with local traffic and whatnot. Why not have an option and have channel 361 be just rotating local on the 8's in SD based on your zip code until the HD one is refined.

Don't like it, just hit EXIT on the remote once the popup comes up about having locals on the 8's and it won't run.

...I like it, but it appears to be a hit and miss situation. On both of my machines (HR-21 7000 I've had to re-boot to get the LOT8 HD. Then if you come back the next day, it's back to the 'old' HD format. Not good!:mad:

As far as I know, the feature should provide weather watches and warnings. When a watch or warning is active, a series of beeps will be played with a notice to press the red button for more info on the watch/warning. There should also be a page during the Local on the 8s that provides watches and warnings if one is active. Does this features work in the HD version? I know it works in the SD version.

DIRECTV HD Customers Now Have Access to Popular Interactive Weather Features and On-Demand Content from The Weather Channel HD
Interactive Weather Features Currently Available on DIRECTV Including 'Local On the 8s' and 'Local on Demand,' Have Generated Close To 1 Billion Household Impressions
EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Oct 06, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- After its successful launch on the standard-definition version of The Weather Channel less than a year ago, DIRECTV's interactive weather applications, including "Local on Demand" and "Local on the 8's" have generated close to 1 billion total household impressions. Now, these same interactive features will be available on the crystal-clear feed of The Weather Channel HD(R) (TWC HD). As an additional benefit, customers can now access TWC VOD content 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week from the DIRECTV on DEMAND platform at the click of a button on their remote control.
The popular interactive weather services include:
Alert Ticker - For certain severe weather conditions, TWC HD viewers will see the Alert Ticker appear at the bottom of their screen. This ticker will give them information on the current weather alert(s) and provide a link to the "Local On Demand" application to get more information.
"Local on the 8s" Application - DIRECTV viewers of The Weather Channel HD can now view the popular "Local on the 8s" segments for their specific locale. Presented six times each hour at :08, :18, :28, :38, :48 and :58 minutes past the top of the hour on The Weather Channel HD, viewers can see current conditions, details for the day's forecast, the seven-day forecast and a regional radar map automatically for their local area. This content is presented with the iconic "Local on the 8s" jazz and popular music soundtrack.
"Local On Demand" Application - While watching TWC HD, DIRECTV viewers can access a menu of interactive weather features for their ZIP code, including current conditions, the five-day forecast, regional radar maps, weather alerts and weather for up to five other cities they can 'save' as favorites - all while continuing to watch live TWC HD programming on the same screen. Additionally, DIRECTV customers will be able to access localized weather information for more than 40,000 ZIP code locations across the United States.
"The vital information available on The Weather Channel provides the perfect platform to offer enhanced interactive capabilities and on-demand content to our customers," said Eric Shanks, executive vice president, DIRECTV Entertainment. "It is clear in the close to 1 billion household impressions generated in less than a year that our customers find these interactive services valuable, so it made sense to extend them to The Weather Channel HD. Providing these enhanced services to the Weather Channel HD furthers our ongoing commitment to creating the most dynamic television experience available."
"We have been thrilled with how important The Weather Channel content has become to DIRECTV HD subscribers," said Becky Powhatan, executive vice president of Distribution and Business Affairs for The Weather Channel. "Now, HD customers will have instant access to severe weather alerts and real time weather conditions in their area with 'Local On Demand' and our signature 'Local On the 8's.'"
DIRECTV on DEMAND is available at no additional charge to customers with a networked DIRECTV Plus(R) HD DVR or R22 DVR. The service offers more than 5,000 titles - including the hottest movies in 1080p - 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week.

It worked here the other day, during a Severe Thunderstorm Warning. I clicked on it and it worked. It came up again, but I didn't click. Unfortunately, it froze up my HR20-700 and I had to reset. Local on the 8's worked, but in between, the video was black, and there was no audio.

I am not sure why, but the only way I can see the "Local on the Eights" is if I push "Enter" on the remote twice when the local on the eights comes up. Otherwise, all I see is the national local on the eights. If I push the red button, I get the same stuff that's always been there, when you push the "Active" button. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Just as a reminder: it takes the application about 30-45 seconds to load before you will see the 'local' content. So, if you tune to the channel and they're already saying "and now... your local on the 8s", then you probably won't see it until the next time.
Also, make sure you don't press 'EXIT' on the remote while on the channel at all or you won't see the local content either.
Don't know if this might help some of you, but thought I would mention it again.

I can't find a list of which receivers this works on. Mine is the HR-20. When I push the red button on TWC nothing happens and I get the little "error" beep tone like you get when pressing down when you are at the bottom of a list. I am connected to the Internet and I can get apps so you would think it would work.
paulman182

Here's the way it is on my HR20, YMMV.
I usually must wait a while after turning to the channel for the local weather to come in.
If I push "exit" after going to the channel, I must wait a while before it works.
It won't show up if you have the guide on the screen, and it won't work if you rewind or are playing from the buffer for some reason.

I wonder if we're going to get local severe weather tones and alerts through this similar to cable?
No, since those are placed on the cable channels at the head end by the cable company using equipment linked to the county/state Emergency Management centers. The Adelphia system I worked at in the 90s was one of the first in New Jersey (if not the country) to have this capability, IIRC.
I wonder if we're going to get local severe weather tones and alerts through this similar to cable?
We are currently under a tornado watch and a box popped up on the upper right top of the screen saying that we are under an alert and to push the red button. There was no tone or alert, just the box popped up. When I hit the red button it activated the active screen, and I hit alerts and it showed we were under a tornado watch.

This feature has been on for a couple of months. Some type of audible alert in addition to the video alert would be a nice addition.

It would be nice. It would all depend on where the data for it is located (separate stream or with the Weather Channel stream itself).

I'd also like to see the warning tone implemented. At least they warnings are being posted. I wonder what the time delay is between issue time and the time it shows up on screen?

Come to think of it, you have to be on the Weather Channel on cable to get it, so if they could do it on DirecTV I am sure it would also have to be on the same channel. But maybe they could add it in a separate data stream that is constantly monitored.

the one thing that really bugs me abut the HD version of TWC is the fact that there is not a clock on the regular broadcast feed like there is on the SD feed.
And it looks like they have done some changes to the HD feed of the City by City Weather.
