View Full Version : S-Video or Component?
I came across something on a website the other day that I found curious. It said that for satellite signal, S-video will provide better picture quality than Component but I would like to know if that's true.
I currently use Component for my HD satellite receiver so it doesn't really affect me, but I just thought I'd see if I could find out if that website's information is correct.

My Dish 6000 going to a DLP projector displays a better picture from a Dish SD signal than the same picture going through the pj via S-Video. It depends on which component does the better upconvert of the signal. Try it both ways and see which way is best for you.
Just from experience I would say that Component (Y-Pr-Pb) would give you a much better picture than S-Video. Component is graded at ATSC and S-Video is only graded at NTSC, so you would get a much better picture from Component cabling.

HOLD ON - look at the SOURCE !!
There maybe cases where your best DBS picture may well come from using the RF connector, if not composite ! If your TV has a good line doubler circuit, but the one in your IRD is not quite so good - you may well decide to use a lower grade of connector to let the TV's circuit do the work and use the Hi-Def connector when viewing HDTV only.
About all that can be said at this point is that each viewer will have to try out the combinations for themselves.

The problem with the RF connector is that it actually degrades your picture and adds very light sparklies, and downgrades you to mono sound. I'd say, start at the top, and if you can see every bloddy MPEG degration that you really didn't want to see, try a lesser connection method. S-Video works great on our JVC 32 inch TV in the living room.
