View Full Version : DVR with one tuner?
Those who've been following my recent postings will be aware that I'm presently doing some system upgrades/reconfiguration. Question is - if I relocate a (authorised and already working) standard DVR to a location with only one input and connect it, will it function with only one tuner active? Or will it refuse to get going at all?

Unless its a SWM setup you may loose channels due to the limited transponders you will get.

It will work fine. You may need to re-run the setup to turn off the second tuner, and you'll only be able to watch "or" record one program at a time.

? How so? Why would there be any limit to the available transponders?
Idea is that it will normally be located somewhere with two feeds available - however, it may occasionally be moved somewhere with only one, I just wondered if it would be an issue.

"On occasion" you may need to turn off the second tuner, or you'll see some 771 errors and miss some recordings if the DVR isn't set to a single tuner mode.
Thanks for the advice - however, chances are it won't be used as a recorder.

this does not limit transponders or channels it only limits the number of channels it can record at the same time, you will most likely need to rerun the setup and select single tuner instead of dual tuner. as mentioned above by veryoldschool

I actually have 1 line going into my HD DVR and 1 line for the OTA. The reason why I don't have two is because I originally had a H20 (which only had 1 input) and upgraded to an HD DVR. It works perfectly fine with the single line. Just make sure it is in Tuner 1 (and not tuner 2). It works fine for me, I can record two shows (1 regular channel and 1 OTA channel) while watching a 3rd OTA channel. For what I use it for, it works perfectly fine. If you don't have an OTA, then you will only be able to watch or record one channel...

This is why I stated maybe. I have a SWM setup so only have 1 line coming in but I wasnt 100% if the Sat 1 and 2 would be affected if they were both not being used to receive all the transponders. Thanks for clearing that up.

 If you're watching a third show, it's not with the HD DVR, since it can only use two tuners at once.
You can record two shows and watch a recording at the same time, but not record two shows AND watch a third show "live", since this would take a third tuner, which isn't available.

Sorry, I stated that wrong. I can record 2 shows and watch a 3rd previously recorded show.

[sorry to jump on you] This was a misprint in the early manuals, so everytime it comes up here, "we" try to correct it. :)

Not a problem, I am glad you caught the mistake because I didn't (even after I read it twice before submitting)...Thanks again :)
it will work you just cant change the channel while you record, if you are truing to get by installation verification just temporary run a jumper from another room but what ever you do reconfig it for the one tuner
