Does anyone know how much longer the SD locals will be on the 72.5 satellite? I'm particularly interested in Altoona/Johnstown, PA. Thanks.

Not months... more like weeks, until they are removed. Those transponders were leased, and Dish Network has acquired the leases there.

Some 72.5 markets will start to go dark 11/4 (from 72.5 slot). I currently don't have a go dark date for Altoona yet.

According to this document http://licensing.fcc.gov/ibfsweb/ib.page.FetchAttachment?attachment_key=704752 the lease on 72.5 has been extended until 2011 so some of the markets may not go dark for a long time....

WHAT?
I thought they were Canadian slots that were being used under temporary authority.

It is a Canadian location. The current sat up there providing the DirecTV locals is owned by DirecTV, leased to the Canadian company that has the rights to use that location and then leased back to DirecTV to use for it's locals. Currently dish already has the other half of the tps there for their eastern arc, they call it 72.7 but it's the same location. I don't doubt that they would love to get the half that DirecTV has currently and probably will at some point I just don't know the exact time line. Dish's most recently launched sat is going to that location and is configured to be able to handle both the even and odd tps so I assume Dish is pretty certain they will get them at some point in the future.

anyone try going to this website www.directv.com/localswap?
If you go down to "how much time do I have?" it has dates for all of the areas.
EDIT: I will quote that section from the website. I guess it really doesnt help the OP much but mayber it will help someone
The transition will happen in late 2009. Below is a list of markets and the transition date in which your equipment MUST be updated. If your equipment is not updated by the date listed below, your local channels cannot be viewed. There are I believe 28 72.5 markets; the DirecTV listing only covers a few of them. The rest are probably going to be during 2010, but as I posted, DirecTV's lease on 72.5 now runs into 2011.
