here! Pay Per View Launches on DIRECTV as Nation's First Television Destination Serving the Gay and Lesbian Market.
YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! D* won't add the suite channels of the premium services or other requested programming customers want; now D*adds this queer as folk nonsense on PPV? D* has their priorities backwards right now!

No, they probably realize they can make money with PPV. Money is what talks, if not enough watch that channel it will drop. The DBS companies could probably care less what they show as long as it sells. If they thought people would pay to watch goldfish on their TV they would make it PPV and add it.

So they're taking an existing PPV channel and running nothing but here! programming on it, right ?
Big deal. One less PPV channel to skim over for me.

And you know what all customers want? As matter of fact "Queer as Folk" is Showtime's most successful series. It is their highest rated show and more importantly (to Showtime), brought them many new subscribers. Will and Grace does very well for NBC and HBO has added a Gay appeal page to their web site in an attempt to cash in on the growing gay market.
There are many cable channels that target a specific audience, Lifetime and WE for women, numerous channels that target kids, sports channels and now the new TNN for men. So a channel that targets gays is really not so unusual. Viacom is also planning a 24 hour gay channel. Last I read, it was going to be called "Out".
I would love to see D* add HBO Comedy and Starz Cinema. In fact, I've called numerous times requesting them. I am also very happy to see the addition of "here" PPV to D*s line-up and I plan to call and let them know that as well.

I guess it does not hurt to experiment. You never know unless you try. This is the only way they will definitely know if this will work for them.

The channel I referred to in my last post (from Viacom) is the Showtime channel. The last I read (5 or 6 months ago) it was going to be a subscription channel with limited commercials (in between the programs) and will cost around $5.00 per month. It was not automatically part of the Showtime package. You do not have to be gay to subscribe to it, just willing to pay an extra $5.00. Of course, the channel will target gay viewers.
None of this is set in stone. As I said, this info is at least 6 months old. The launch was planned for 2003.
I just read an update and "Outlet" has been put on hold. The channel will not launch this year. The reason given by Viacom was the poor state of the U.S. economy. The article did not give much more detail then that.
