Anyone know if this Calvary eSATA drive will work on the HR20-700?

Mine's been working great for almost 2 years now. The blue light in the front is REALLY bright, so if that stuff bothers you you'll have to cover it or point it away from you.

You have had the 2Tb drive for two years?

Every Cav I've tried on a 20-700 has worked. Be aware that the Cavs are far from the best eSATAs you can buy. I've bought a lot of them and I've had problems with most of them. Noise, disk failures, etc. I've got one 750G left.

We're using a 1TB Calvary (same box style as you linked to) and it's worked for at least a year now. The light on the front is pretty bright, just FYI if you're watching it in a dark room.

I've been using a Cavalry 1 TB for almost 2 years now and it works great. It is a little noisy but not bothersome. I put it behind the TV so I don't see the lights.

Oops, didn't notice that. Nope, I've been using the 1TB version.

For the OP:
There are lots of that drive that will work, but what is your end goal? Do you want a reliable setup that could be trouble-free for many years, or to save a few pennies do you want to go with drives that seem to be less reliable and prone to failure?

CC - Well I want the 2TB and to be reliable for as long as possible. I think my internal is about to die as it keeps freezing up on playbacks so I want to make a decision soon. Do you have a different recommendation for a 2TB that is say a step up from the Calvary?

SUre, Either go with one of D*'s specifically recommended setups, or go with an ANTEC MX-1 with a WD 2TB green drive...you'll find a large percentage of eSATA users here using that combo.

I'd go with CCarncross's suggestion. I just threw a 1.5TB WD Green Caviar HDD in an MX-1 enclosure yesterday and it works perfectly. I'd think that would last a whole lot longer than the Cav. And it will work on every HR. I've bought my last Cav. Just not as "quality oriented" as most of the other eSATAs. The last time I tried to contact Cav tech support by phone, I was told that they had been bought out by another company and tech support was only available by email.

If I'm not mistaken, Cavalry doesn't make hard drives, just the enclosures. I bought one a year ago and it had a WD Green Caviar HDD in it.
From their website (http://www.cavalrystorage.com/faq_general.htm):
Who manufactures the hard drives used in your enclosures?
We have multiple hard drive suppliers including, but not limited to, Seagate, Western Digital (WD), Maxtor, Samsung, and Toshiba.

That's the conclusion I came to a couple years ago. bought eight of them in about a two month period and all were so noisy I had to return them. I did take one apart and I think it had a WD HDD in it, but for some reason it banged and clattered so badly it was unusable. Did work tho. Recorded and played back.
Then about a year later I had an opportunity to get Cavs again and they were considerably improved. I did call Cav tech support before I purchased them and asked them if they should lie flat or be in the vertical position since they come with a base for vertical positioning. They told me to lay them flat. Even laying flat, I had to put cushions under them. Couldn't stand the noise on a wood or glass shelf.
I still have one 750 Cav left and it's worked flawlessly. Bought two 2TB Cavs and one failed after three months and the other one went south after the last NR. They cost me $460 apiece and I did expect more out of them.
From their website (http://www.cavalrystorage.com/faq_general.htm):
I gotta check the link and see if they still only do tech support by email.

Just checked the link and they were bought out by Bason (never heard of that company) and still only do tech support by email. I'd be a bit leery of them. Before they got bought out, their tech support was pretty good.

I thought D* DVR's couldn't handle bigger than 1.5 TB drives via eSATA. Think I read it somewhere on this forum. I could be mistaken though.

I do know that the 20-700 will handle at least 2TB eSATAs. Had one running for over a year until the last NR ruined it. Ran perfectly the day before the NR, then wouldn't stop freezing up and I got rid of it. I had the distinct feeling that the 20-700 could have handled a bit more capacity. I did fill it up a couple times and it worked perfectly, dropped off the "unsaved" programs as needed and recorded the new programs correctly.
For the rest of the HRs, I know the 23s will handle a 2TB internally if you can get hold of an "owned" 23. The 22-100s are also capable of handling 2TB eSATAs according to posts I have read. The rest of them, I dunno.
I have ten active HRs and use five 20-700s, all with 1.5TB HDDs, to back up each other. The 1.5s are about $80 cheaper than the 2TBs and I find the 1.5s to be sufficient for my purposes.

If that's the case then I stand corrected. BTW ot, this seems to be the Yankees year huh...:nono:

I'm not saying anything about the Yankees...yet. I'm not religious or superstitious, but I played for a long time, umpired when hurt, coached and managed after I couldn't play anymore and I kinda got a thing about The Gods Of Baseball.

I just installed a 2TB External Cavalry HD on a HR-21-700 and installed
a 2TB Green Drive on a HR-20-700. Followed the following procedures on these two e-sata drives:
1. Power off the HD DVR.
2. Connect the eSATA drive to the HD DVR.
3. Power up the eSATA drive.
4. Power up the HD DVR.
Everything is working fine with both drives they are recording all my pre-program shows and playing them back with no problem.
However when I check the DirecTV on Demand it has not started to download
any of them. Yes it's been over 48 Hours. (they say wait 24 hours).
I reset both receivers and I am going to let them cook for another 48 hours.
If that does work I will do 1 to 4 over again on both receivers and let them
cook for another 48 to 72 hours.
Can anyone shed any light on my situation?
