View Full Version : 1 tuner working SWM and HR21
I have a question for you guys. Sorry if this has a thread, or has been asked before. I promised I looked.
I have 2 Directv Accounts (1 Idaho, 1 Utah).
I just got my Utah account installed at my house in Utah and wanted the installer to install my Idaho HD-DVR (HR21) in my Utah house. He said that he can't, I understood his reasons. He hooked up the SWM for my 2 HR23's, SD DVR and SD box. All of those work fine. I hooked up my HR21 and for some reason it is not getting Tuner 2. Is there something I am missing?
I took off the B-Band.
I checked all connections.
I made sure the HR21 settings are aware of the SWM and it says dual tuner.
I know having 2 accounts is silly but I can't give up the "Distant" locals.
Thanks for all of your help.
Also, one of my HR23's is LOUD. What can I say to the local company for them to replace it? They are not very helpful....... :(

2 HR23's, SD DVR and SD box.
Not sure which SWM and/or how you have these connected, "but" I count seven tuners, so there would be only one more "free" on the SWM.

The SWM allows for up to 8 tuners. You are already using 7 with your existing equipment so there is only one more available for the extra box you are trying to put in
I should be able to hook up 8? Right?
Currently I have:
2 - HR23's
1 - HR21's (other acct) only showing 1 tuner
1 - SDDVR
1 - SD
Can I only hook up 8 tuners? Not 8 coax's?
Am I missing something?

yes only 8 tuners are allowed, not 8 coax's
I will go double check that the installer did not hook up extra coax's. Do you think that could cause any problems?

it can cause problems but that is not the problem
the problem is that you are trying to put 9 tuners on a system that can only support 8.
Let me make sure I am understanding this. The HR21 will always only have one tuner working because of the limitations of the SWM-8?
Thanks for all of your help........ I was a little confused.

Well techinically yes and no. The last box you try to add to the system will only get 1 tuner. The recievers are assigned their frequency on bootup. So if you were to disconnect your SDDVR, and reboot the HR21, then reconnect and reboot up your SDDVR, you would only have one tuner on the SDDVR. Or if you put the SD receiver as the last box in line you wouldnt get anything on it.

Basically, a SWM system maps the data streams from 8 unique transponders onto its 8 frequency ranges. Which transponders are mapped depend upon which which tuners request which channels. Theoretically, if you had any number of tuners connected, but they only requested 8 unique transponders, then you could run an "overloaded" SWM. However, when one tuner changes channels and now your tuners need to see more than 8 transponders, some tuner is going to get denied.
So, bottom line, you can have a maximum of 8 tuners on a SWM. That can be four dual-tuner DVR's, eight single-tuner recovers, or any combination in between. There is an option on the DVR's to use only on tuner, so if you want to use your SWM with all these receivers, you should set that on one of the DVR's so your total active tuner count does not exceed 8.
Thanks for your help guys!
I decided that the HD DVR is more important than the exercise room SD rec. When the wife delivers the baby we will rearrange.
So if I decide to upgrade to an SWM-(higher than 8) do I just need to replace the switch or can I do a split of the switch?
I am just happy I was able to convince the wife to let us have 2 tv's in the living room. A 52" Sammy LCD and a Sony 36" SD. Nothing like 2 games at one time!!!
I unplugged the Sd rec and now the HR21 works like a champ. Thanks!

there is nothing higher than 8 for a swm system. Its the maximum, there is nothing you can upgrade. you are also confusing terminology. The SWM-8 is an entirely differnt thing than the SWM system with the 8 way splitter you have in your house.
Sorry showtime........
trying to act like I knew what the hell I was talking about :(

Sorta kinda true....
The SWMLNB is indeed an 8-tuner capacity unit, period.
With any other 5LNB dish, you can install 2 SWM8 units in tandem via splitters (certain kinds, not just any ones), ending up with 16 tuners supported (the standalone SWM8 type devices sold at Solidsignal and other places). A number of folks at DBSTalk have actually done that successfully now for some time.
I would recommend anyone who is interested visit the SWM thread if they want more information on what can be done, espeically towards the later pages of posts there:

You can always add a secondary 18" dish and use it to feed one or more of the SD receivers and/or DVRs to free up the SWM to feed more HD DVR and receivers.
