Ok, here is my observation of my family.
Normally, good movies come out that the kids want to see in the theater (Finding Nemo...). They love it. Eventually, it comes out on DVD, way sooner than ppv. We get it for out kids for a birthday/Christmas present, or just for fun. They watch it for a few days, then forget about it.
I see a funny movie in the guide, one that I know my 10 year old boy would like, but my wife wouldn't, like The 'Burbs, and I pvr it. The kids love it, and watch it over and over for months.
What I notice, is that the kids (and I do) think that watching something from PVR is way easier than searching through DVDs and putting them in. Plus the fact that they can be in the middle of The 'Burbs, and I can be in the middle of Enemy of the State, and we both can pick up where we left off.
There are CD players that hold 300 CDs. Why aren't there DVD players that hold 300 DVDs? I almost prefer buying ppv instead of DVDs because of this. Almost.
Does anyone know of a consumer product that does something like this? Does anyone think that this would be a good product? A stupid one?
I can't image that this would be a difficult product make. It would have to work similar to a pvr, in that I want a menu listing all the movies (discs) I have, and be able to start over/resume the movie. Maybe it could even be able to break up the movies into themes, so searching would be quicker.
