WOW!!! This dude was very fortunate to have a TV station take up this fight on his behalf.
That being said, I think that he was aware of the stipulations as laid out to him by D*, and he decided to not pay what the contract mandated had to be paid in the event of early termination.

Someone should have told him he wouldn't be able to get AZ locals when he traveled outside of their spotbeam....he should have never been signed up in the first place.

Problem with that is many people never see the contract nor does DirecTV spell out the terms, or as in my case never see or and never sign anything.
The DirecTV installer was here June 2008 and service techs out here 2 time since the last one weekend before last and I have yet to see the first bit of paper or sign anything. Because I have been assured here this is UNpossible I specifically waited the other day to see if the tech would have me sign something, he did not. All different guys.
My repeated experience proves to me without doubt this is must be a common place occurrence for DirecTV customers.

Exactly. He was lied to by a Directv representative, so I feel he owes them nothing (As long as he returns their receivers, unless he outright purchased them). CSRs should be held responsible for what they tell customers!

In response to Max Mike.
Your situation may have been different. However Dude was aware as per this quote
"Dick says DirecTV did disclose its cancellation policy, but admits he didn't pay attention to how much the fee could be." Which puts a totally different light on the situation.

However, he was sold on a feature that's not possible.

We don't know what the "real" story is, did he say he wanted to travel all over North America? Or did he say "I want to get D* in my motorhome, will I be able to get my locals?" Two totally different things, yes you can say a CSR should assume he means all over the country. But in truth a lot of people that take their RV's out don't really travel outside of the spotbeams so they wouldn't know the diff. Unless you have the call recorded who's to say who is correct?

I thought it was a positive thing that despite having strict cancellation policies when DirecTV realized that the service was mis represented to the customer they waived the fee. Plus the account was setup incorrectly, shouldn't an RV account have the DNS networks for exactly this reason??

He requested to have his LiLs as he specifically wanted the Phoenix locals.

The story is positive toward Directv. The customer admits he knew of the cancellation penalty bud didn't bother to check the details or the amount?? Whose fault is that? And, for those of you that assume he was "lied to" by a Directv CSR--how do you know that having only seen one side of the story? Many times, people hear what they want to hear, not necessarily what was said, so he may not have been lied to at all. The cancellation penalty is the cancellation penalty--if you don't agree with it, don't cancel, or don't sign up.
I have been a Directv customer since the first morning of the first day that service was available. My account number is mostly all zero's, so I'm one of the first. I have always received all the details of the member agreement in writing whenever a change was made, and I have no problems with it as the choice to continue to renew my service has been totally mine.
