How can you block yahoo messenger with a router? This is the router but not sure how to block things.

Not easily accomplished on a home router, because YIM will use port 80 if others aren't opened.
What I would do in this case would be to get a free account with Opendns.com and then set the filter there. Letting them handle the heavy lifting means that the system will remain tuned if a newer version of the software changes the way they connect to the servers.

+1 for the openDNS solution. It will give you a lot of control of what is happening on your network !

It's going to block the YIM servers at the DNS level, so they will most likely receive a message that the server cannot be found, unable to log in, something like that.
Sign up for the free account and you will find more details there.

If configured to just block IM traffic it will not block WEB traffic.
If one tries to login to an IM server that is blocked you will get a connection failed, depending on which software you are using.

So, if I wanted to block all access to Facebook on all computers on a network?
What about only certain computers on a network that share a common WAN IP?

You may be able to specify LAN IP's for filtering, but if you use DHCP, then you'd probably be better off giving each computer a null HOSTS file entry for Facebook.com.
