I just bought 20 Phillips DSX5500, and had 1 DOA and one died on the 4th day. We're going back to the Hughes receivers.
I've had good luck with the GAEB0A, and just got a new shipment of the new H series. We'll see how they do.

Hi,
Most Directv receivers are the same specially basic receivers like the DSX-5500 and the GAEBO. I mean they might have one or two features that are different but overall in terms of quality and features they are the same.
Now, I would recommend the Philips DSX5540 and the Hughes GCEBO they are a step up and have excellent features...You will do fine by Philips or Hughes.
Hope that helps you out in making a decision...what I recommend also you do is go to Google.com and enter satellite you should get some good leads on online retailers that sell Directv receivers. Most online dealers offer excellent deals

The GAEB0A and DSX5500 are the cheaper units we dealers can buy for resale. And I agree with lempira1421 in regards to the GCEB0 being a nice unit.
One thing I would keep in mind, the Hughes receivers can be repaired by your dealer if he is a Hughes service center. The Hughes GCEB0 receiver is fully covered including lightning strikes for 1 year - parts and labor and has an extra two year warranty available.
The Phillips has an overnight replacement warranty.
My sales people/installers tell me they much prefer the Hughes over the Phillips.
If you are upgrading, I would recommend going up to the DVR with TiVo. I have two Hughes TiVo, one Hughes GAEB0, and one Phillips DSX5500. When HD TiVo arrives I'll be buying one!
Good luck in your shopping! BTW, look for a good deal with your local dealer first. If there are problems, he's easier to find!
I bought a Hughes, got the new H series model.. Was a little more then the old model. It does all I want and is much faster the the Sony, which was my main objective..

Glad to hear you like the Hughes. I'm getting a new cust deal and have been comparing the receivers. I didn't like the Philips much for a few different reasons, but have been concentratingon the Hughes and Samsungs. They have a deal for 4 of the new series Directors with install and a Oval triple lnb or free!! Pretty amazing compared to the deals they offered new subs in past years. I have also found a deal for 3 of the Sir 75s (Samsung) for free. No triple oval, but has the multiswitch. $35 bucks delivered and free install. Those are last years midlevel Samsungs and I have been told that they are identical to this years new models. How does the remote compare to your old Sony? I know the Hughes is faster, but do you like your sony better from all other aspects? Thanks for your thougts!
