View Full Version : Need new 1TB drive -recommendations???

I need a new 1TB drive for my move to Windows 7. There are so many drives that all seem the same. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good reliable drive. Reliability is more important than speed. I need an SATA drive.

Right now I'd stick to Western Digital for reliability. For speed with reliability I'd look at the more expensive models. For pure least cost and reliability I'd check the daily drive prices at your many favorite online vendors of Western Digital drives.

(To appease any FTC future guidelines for disclosure, I have not received anything from Western Digital or related companies. These opinions are my own.) :)

Honestly you can not go wrong with many of the major manufacturers, talk to anyone that has been around the business long enough and they've all had their issues at one time or another.

Since I've been in the industry since Hard Drives weren't even standard on PC I've certainly got my stories / experiences but won't bother slamming any on specific brand.

Personally I stick with Seagate Retail Drives - The reason being is they still have an industry leading 5 year warranty. If you buy the OEM version they will only come with a 3 year which is still the same or better then anyone else but for the extra few $ you'd pay for them at say Best Buy or Frys when they are on sale why not get the extra 2 years.

Seagate is probably out of their most recent spell of problems, and you're right, 5 years is pretty good stuff. :)

Just be aware..... the lower-priced SATA drives are the ~5900 RPM "Green" drives, while $10 more gets you the 7200 RPM drives.

Looking at NewEgg.... $80-$95 gets you a 1 TB drive, while $119 will get you a 1.5 TB drive. 2 TB still, to me, seems like immature technology.

Agreed...and my 1TB Seagate installed in my PC about 6 months ago has been working flawless (and getting plenty of workout).

The 5 year warranty, as well as image backups periodically, allows me to sleep quite well at night. :D

For PC system drives, I like the WD Caviar Black series.

That is what is readily available at my local BB and was what I had in mind to get.

The Caviar Black series has 5yr on OEM check newegg for pricing, I'm using a 640gb drive currently & loving it, previous drive was a 74gb 10,000rpm rapter & this is faster :)

mechanical harddrives are the weak point of pc as max is 5.9 (what mine is getting) rating in win 7 btw only seen SSD's get higher scores

I do not think there is any real difference and they are probably the same. The Newegg one is an OEM (bare) drive and the Best Buy one appears to be the retail packaged drive of the same specs. The BB one is a fine choice for your requirements and a good warranty at 5 years.

This particualr drive is a RE3 class drive. It's for hostile areas and longevity. High vibration tolerance. Not for the typical home PC.
