H21-200 Failures?

I use a H21-200 in my multi-room distributed AV system rack, and it is mounted in a vented Mid-Atlantic custom rack mount. I was greeted with the wife asking me "why isn't the satellite receiver coming on?". Went down to the rack and found that the H21-200 is not powering on. The LAN jack LEDs are also out. I confirmed power at the plug in cord.

Any one else have a H21-200 fail to where it won't turn on anymore?

Solution, fix?

I was looking at the PS photos in the H21-200 first look posting, and see there is a fuse on the PS board. But as an electronics engineer with 20+ yrs in design and troubleshooting, including PS design, I know that before I even pull this thing out of the rack, a fuse doesn't blow for no apparent reason (at least 99% of the time), so I'm sure I'm in for more than a blown fuse.


I was planning on calling DTV for a replacement, but I hope they sent me another H21-200, otherwise the damn rack mount will cost more to replace than the cost of the receiver. Anyone know what the current model HD (non-dvr) receiver is that is being shipped by DTV?

These Receivers are leased, so you're not supposed to open them up and attempt any repairs. And, as you know, it's likely more than just a blown fuse.

Most likely you'll get an H21 or H23 HD Receiver. Both are functionally equivalent and should work fine in your rack.

Well, the fuse is good, and the power supply module is producing the 12v & 5v outputs to the main board, so I guess the main board is the culprit.

Directv is sending me a free replacement (model # roulette), but if they send me a H23-600, and there is a difference in face size, it will cost me more to get a new rack mount than it would to go over to Best Buy and purchase another new H21-200.

But the million $ question is - Is the H23-600 the same size front panel as the H21-200? I don't care about the depth, as the Middle Atlantic rack mount shelf can accomodate variations in deptch, but the critical part is the length x width of the front panel which protrudes the custom cut front rack panel.

Anyone know for sure if the H23 and H21 are the same size front panel? They look close in the H23 "First Look" photos, but if you look REAL close, it looks lik they H23 might be even so slightly shorter in height. The width looks ok though.

I'm pretty sure they're the same size. But I don't have an H23, so let's hope somebody here knows for certain.

I don't know the exact dimensions but they are extremely close if not the exact same size. I only have 23s on my truck right now so I wouldnt be able to give you a comparison

My H21-200 won't turn on either. Just happened yesterday. I was in EUR for the past two weeks using it. Went to use it yesterday and it won't turn on.
