Got in the mail a flyer and saw a commerical for Bellsouth's DSL Lite.

If is basically $35 a month for max 256K Upload/128k download speed, while the regular DSL is $50.

To be honest my original speed was around 256k/128k for $50, but 6 months in a hardware upgrade made it more like 1256k/???k.

I wonder if this will attract anyone??? Granted $15 a month less expensive may attract some people, but I think they need to offer like $25/month for DSL Lite before alot of people would consider it???

Hum, that speed seems a little slow for the price. I'd say at that speed, they should give it to you for say $28. For $35, I think they should give at least 512/128. Best price point I think would be 512/128 for $30.

I used to have sprint dsl till work stopped reimbursing me. Before I switched (1 year ago), they were charging me $65 for 1.5/265 service. Switch to TWC/Earthlink cable modem, $42 for about 2.0/384 (pretty consistent, don't think a ton of people have it around me). I will admit, TWC in our area does a good job.

DSL needs to find that attractive price to be competitive.

marko, was that $42 including a discount for subbing to cable as well or $42 without subbing to cable? I have BS DSL 1.5/256 which amounts to 1.2/215 after overhead is taken into account. I sure could use that 384 upload for plaing Xbox Live but I am not about to sub to cable and ditch satellite.

Hey Lee, this was the price for just the cable modem. My bill might be $45 now, but it used to be $42. Right now the the normal price is $45, and if you choose Earthlink as your ISP then it is $29 for the first 6 months. Here is the price breakdown.

As far as if you subscribe to cable, I could never figure out the price from their site. I think you might get a discount, but I really can't tell since they never really tell you what the price is. But no need for me to switch anytime soon, although a couple years down the road I'll be getting HDTV, and this is one area where TWC does have its act together -- although I guess really most of the programming offered is local. Not sure if I can get all the digital locals here.

Well it's easy to argue the price down, you're looking at it as a consumer. Try to see things from the BS perspective. ;)

Think about it from the perspective of an AOL user at $23.90 for dial up. You get your telephone freed up, faster access and it's always on. Also, if you up the speed or lower the price too much, you cannibalize too many of your $50 subs. I think that's a good price point for pulling in "high utilization AOL/MSN users".

TWC NC used to offer a 'discount' on RoadRunner if you also had cable. They stopped that a couple months ago, so cable subscribers and non-subscribers can get RR for 44.95/month, i believe it is. However, they tacked the deal on the other end--if you get Digital Cable and RR, it's like 90 bucks, which is 5-10 less than they'd all be a la carte. Kinda like ''free delivery' at a pizza place, but they have 'pick up specials' for five bucks less.

512/128 DSL is better then dial-up. Currently I still have dial-up, partly because I get it Free through the University that my wife teaches at, If Centurytel, which is my local phone company offered a 512/128 DSL tier for $35, I would consider this. Going from $0 per month for dial-up to $35 per month would be a little easier to justify then going from $0 to $50 for full DSL.
