View Full Version : Best Universal Remote for $400 or less

Ok so I'm sick of having 8 remotes and I need to go to a single solution. RF is not a deal breaker for me as my entertainment center really isn't setup for use with RF blasters.

So far there is not a remote that will work native with RF on the DirecTV side that I can find. I'm looking at the Harmony 900 or the Harmony One based on reviews I've read on the net.

Although perhaps a little more than you wanted to spend, the URC MX3000 is an incredibly awesome remote and highly customizable. You can sometimes find good deals on it via eBay.

I second the call for a URC but would suggest the MX-880. Best remote I have had. My 980 is more powerful but the 880 easier to use.

Check the Directv forum. Someone was going to make a universal remote with native DirecTV RF.

At $20 from J&R Music (http://www.jr.com/universal-remote/pe/UNV_WR7/), the Universal WR7 (http://universalremote.com/product_detail.php?model=169) is a "steal", IMHO.

Great hand feel, very comfortable "cruise control" layout, up to 13 20-step macros, full learning capability (although device 173 has all the HR keys pre-programmed, except "R-G-B-Y", "back" and "Active"... you'll have to "learn" these.) Backlit and runs forever off two AA's. I've been using it's predecessor, the R7, for a couple of years and love it.

If you're into hard-core programming, I'd recommend the R7 as well. If you prefer a web-based approach, the Harmony series are excellent. The Harmony One might be the best choice for your configuration.

If you want the best in programmability, get a Pronto. You can pickup a TSU7000 color model for under $300 on eBay.

The newest and best from Harmony is the 900.
Seems like a great remote.

If you want an easy type in your devices and watch it set everything up for you remote go with the Harmony's.

If you want control over what each button can do, custom macros, and to spend some time learning and programming the remote to do exactly what you want...URC or Phillips Pronto is the only way to go.

The MX-880 by URC is a great remote, just set one up for a customer. Only thing lacking for Directv are the colored buttons and List button, but they can be added on the screen.
