1.3 Million Handy Switch Wireless Light Switches Recalled

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The flick of a switch could spark a house fire if you have a certain kind of light switch.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is recalling about 1.3 million Handy Switch Wireless Light Switches marketed by Idea Village Products Corp.

The light switch receiver, which fits into the wall outlet, can overheat and pose a fire hazard to consumers. There have been 14 reports of overheating, including nine reports of fire. Five of those fire reports involved property damage such as minor damage to curtains, bedding or walls.

The Handy Switch, made in China, is a white plastic wireless remote light switch with model number KS-080 printed on the back of the receiver. On the front of the receiver is a blue electroluminescent nightlight.

The switches were sold at drug store chains and other stores nationwide. They were also sold through television infomercials and the internet from March 2007 through July 2009 for between $10 and $15.

If you have one, unplug it, stop using it and contact IdeaVillage to learn about fixing the problem for free.
