View Full Version : Too Many Home Shopping Networks are on Direc Tv
How many other folks out there think that Direc Tv Needs to Tone down on Adding so many Home Shopping Networks? I personally think that there are too many. Any other thoughts?

No one is making you watch them. Plus they lower you bill :)
Take them out of your favorites list and they won't exist anymore.

Well, so does DISH! AND, our cable system has FOUR of them on our analog lineup!
What can we do about it?
About the only thing to do is do what TerryC says - take 'em out of your favs list...
DirecTV is paid to carry this trash. Just delete the channels from your main list and there you go.
Obviously no thinking person does any business with these hucksters, frauds, and crooks.

You might find something interesting on those channels once in awhile. Ultimate Chopper sounds good to me! :D

QVC and HSN are about the only legitimate shopping channels on the air. ShopNBC has always seemed to me as being second rate... the people on there never gave me the impression of being trustworthy. ACN is nothing more than hicks with fake, plastic looking jewelry. I don't know of any others.... perhaps that's a good thing :)

I couldn't have said it better myself Billls! My mom periodically buys kitchenware from QVC and HSN the other channels don't get a second look. You want to talk about hicks, a few years ago Shop At Home had had this guy named Walker Johnson. He was the electronics host and I would just crack up at him. When selling that crappy North Gate computer he would always say 'This computer has more technology then the first tv studio I worked at' and other stupid stuff. The guy was just so lame it was funny. I always enjoy watching the computer shows though, it's amazing how much they deceive the buyer and over glorify things. I'd go back to my old IBM 100Mhz machine in a heartbeat before I would ever buy a computer off of the tv.
BTW- Dish still has three more shopping channels then DirecTV, so the waste isn't as bad for D* subs.

Back when I had Dish, I would watch ShopNBC for kicks and would always see that guy with the slicked-back hair selling computers. I'll always remember what he said: "I cut out the middleman. You're buying direct from me, I build these computers using name-brand components. The big guys will never give you a deal like the one I can give you, that's why ShopNBC sells my computers."
Anyway, I fire up the 'ol T-60 the other day and lo and behold I happen to be wandering in the shopping channel range and stop at ShopNBC. There they are selling "the big guy's" computers, Dell to be exact. Hair boy is gone, no trace of his "Direct from the manufacturer" computers. Maybe QVC wooed him over

ShopNBC used to be ValueVision. ValueVision was started by 3 former QVC people (one on air, two management types). Both QVC and ValueVision were started in Minneapolis. I sold and installed a 10' c-band dish for one of the founders (Carmella Richards and husband) because the Minneapolis cable company didn't have VV on 24/7 when they first started out. I ended up being good friends with Carmella and her husband and still keep in touch even after being in Florida since 1997. He was actually the inspiration of this thread that I started earlier: http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=15197 When I moved to Florida I actually sold a Dish system to a couple who only wanted it to watch Carmella on ValueVision. Talk about needing to get a life. There are actually some people out there who watch these channels just like the network channels or sports news channels. It takes all kinds I guess.

I also remember that guy. Does those couple of guys still sell those cards that used to sell them on Shop At Home?
I watch HSN only when they have craftopia on . I do crafts . I saw stain glass . that you peel off . Put on the U.S flag . then halloween put a punkin on your window , then for thankgiving put a turkey on , then for cristmas put , santa on the window . THe for valentines , put a heart on . At least you can change it . Otherwise , there is nothing on the shopping networks .
The only time I watch the shopping channels is when me and my friends and drunk and wanna piss off some people. You just call and ask stupid questions and wast there time. One time some guy from HSN kept on calling us back again and again and again. Its immature but always fun.
Well there are about a dozen post about not watching the shopping channels but each has a story about a person or event. Guess some people have short memories about what they are watching.

The only shopping channels I watch are the INFOMERCIALS! :D Other than that, I like QVC, SAH, and HSN.

I disagree. (edit 7-42-03: Now I AGREE since they are scamming people of their identity. Go here:

We now return to our regularly scheduled program:
I watch that channel now and then and their jewlery looks genuine. The channels I think that have fake looking jewlery are Direct Shopping and GemAuction. (DS airs on 221 and GA is on 225 every night.)
I agree with the original thread: too many shopping channels out there. I'm sure Directv is required to carry many of them due to contractual obligations and network packaging, and it's true that there is a market out there for shopping networks, but when you get upwards to 10 shopping channels, it's getting a bit much.
Do all of these extra channels force Directv to increase the compression on the signal? If so, then I'm STRONGLY for them limiting the number they carry.

They probably compress these shopping channels a bit more than the regular channels. I doubt its affecting compressing of the other channels that much if at all. Additional locals going up is causing a lot more compression. For every market or two that goes up that is just like adding the same amount of channels that exists as there are shopping channels.

No it's not like adding locals. Locals, (except for DirecTV on 119, but that will be changing) because their on spot beams do not effect the quality of any conus channel. The last umpteen markets added have no effect on the compression of any other channel except for fellow locals from different markts that already reside on the same transponder and beam. Granted, if there were no locals up, there would be no need for spot beams and that would increase the amount of conus bandwidth but that isn't the case.
Locals are currently an issue on DIRECTV because most of the new markets added in the past 6 months have been placed on the national beam at 101. Until the new spot beam satellite is up at 119, these channels will be taking up room at 101 causing more compression on other channels.

My old 27" TV finally bit the dust over the weekend and I got a Sony 27 inch flat-screen (no HDTV yet for me, much too expensive). I've noticed a lot more signs of compression with the new set (artifacts, general crispness, etc). Hopefully with the launch of Directv 7S that'll clear up, but I wasn't aware that the PQ had declined that rapidly.
Wide Open West's analog channel lineup for Southeast Michigan (Detroit DMA) has five home-shopping services: QVC, HSN, ShopNBC, ACN, and Shop at Home. Ridiculous, indeed. Especially when most cable systems -- with similar, fiber-optics channel capacity -- limit such content to two or three.

Thats pretty good that DirecTv can put all of those local markets so far on one satellite slot and Dish has to have extra slot(s) to put the locals up. If DirecTv can do it then why not Dish? Amount of transponders available? There should not be that big of a difference.

D* has licences to operate all 32 transponders at 101, 6 of which are spot beam, 11 on 119 and 3 on 110. E* has 21 at 119, 16 conus-5 spot beam and 29 at 110, 24 conus-spot beam. Anyone know how many spot beam transponders will be on D7S?
