View Full Version : Nobody at Microsoft watches TV????

This is weird. From Wayne Friedman's TV Watch (http://www.mediapost.com/publications/?fa=Articles.showArticle&art_aid=116153#comments): Microsoft was all set to use that cool Fox animated show "Family Guy" to launch its new Windows 7 software, with a special called "Family Guy Presents: Seth & Alex's Almost Live Comedy Show." The show was supposed to air on Nov. 8 during the big November sweep period without commercial interruption and with -- no surprise, here -- branded messaging about Windows 7 scattered throughout.
...Apparently, Microsoft thought "Family Guy" was all about advertising-friendly family entertainment -- while the special supposedly included funny bits on deaf people, the Holocaust, feminine hygiene and incest.
.
...It soon became clear the content was not a good fit with the Windows 7 brand. "We initially chose to participate in the Seth and Alex variety show based on the audience composition and creative humor of 'Family Guy,"" according to a reported statement. I know there's somebody who works for Microsoft who watches the show. You know, the guy over in the corner who quietly asked early on "Are you sure you want to do this?"
There's another story (http://www.mediabuyerplanner.com/entry/46042/microsoft-kills-family-guy-sponsorship/?utm_source=mbp&utm_medium=email&utm_content=textlink&utm_campaign=newsletter) about this on MediaBuyerPlanner with links to stories in Variety and Adweek.

I don't watch Guy, King, Simpsons, Future or anything similar.
...the special supposedly included funny bits on deaf people, the Holocaust, feminine hygiene and incest.Just four of the many, many reasons I choose not to watch Family Guy or similar garbage, but I am confident there are enough imbedded nerds @ MS who think FG is representative of good old American values. Perhaps Bill & Melissa would have FG do a humorous bit on starving children around the world. :nono2:

Not only do I watch Family Guy (I think it is hilarious), i also think it is funny that it took this long for MS to figure that Family Guy has a family, but it really isn't family friendly, lol.
But, I'm starting a prayer breakfast/bible study with the youth and we're going to go through the book "The Gospel According to the Simpsons" :)
Can't wait!

I dont believe anyone is claiming Family Guy represents good old fashioned American Values, its a comedy spoof on it. Its comedy Nick, either you like it or you don't...

We're going to focus on the fact that the Simpsons, though not saints in the slightest (neither are we for that matter, Simul iustus et peccator) do pray, attend church reguraly, sin, the Bible, look to God in times of crisis, and more. We'll also talk about how we, at times are just like the Simpsons...you can find God even in the funniest of places...
You'd be very surprised how much positive attention the Simpsons gives religion and Christianity.
Here's the book(s) were using, just in case you're interested...

I have two children.
The girl, 24 watches some Hulu. About three shows.
The boy, 20 watches no TV. None. Not even online. He reads, listens to music, and goes to the movies.
Sounds like MS has a lot of young people working for them.

I like Family Guy, but I do admit every now and then they cross a line I wonder if they should have crossed.
That said... in this day and age of relatively immediate access to research, I find it odd that Microsoft was "surprised" at the content of the upcoming show. Why would any company sign on to sponsor without first knowing what they were sponsoring to see if it was in line with that they wanted to be associated?
In this case, it makes me think less of Microsoft because it feels more like a knee-jerk reaction to fear.

Stands for the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Spaghetti_Monster)
I agree Stewart, definitely seems like a knee-jerk reaction...
On one hand, I can see them not wanting to be a part of it...
On the other hand, lots of young adults will watch I'm sure (though I probably won't) and they'll miss out on advertising to the potential 'apple drones' who will :)
Oh dear Lord!
Looks like the world will soon be run by moronic 17-22 year-old dolts, if not already.
Someone growing up immersed in a video-game society where values and morals, not to mention spelling and grammar, are considered an anachronism of little or no value in today's world would have no frame of reference for polite behavior (much less, how or when to write a semi-literate note of sympathy for the premature death of decency).

I'm sure our parents' generation was saying something similar about us when we were moronic 17-22 dolts. But we grew out of it (or at least the ones who are running the world did.)

The last time I looked, Family Guy airs on both Fox and Adult Swim. Never watched it on purpose. Of course, I don't watch any of the non-Anime lineup on Adult Swim either.
Of course, Amazon has Family Guy DVDs for sale. At least seven volumes.
Then, of course, Fox.com has full episodes of Family Guy off their website.

phrelin,
I think it's just a matter of different times and generations.
When I was coming up, we had an old B&W TV and that was the only outlet available to us.
Now, they have computers, cell phones, video games, and they are endlessly connected.
When I got my car, I was gone!
My son has a friend who is 20 and he hasn't even bothered to get a license yet.
HDTV is like the most awesomest thing ever for me.
I'll watch mediocre programming in HD in lieu of something more interesting in SD.

I did that too, when there were only a few HD channels available. Now, I hardly watch any SD at all.

The only SD show that I really watch is "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" And it is widescreen SD to boot, but man is it hilarious!
