View Full Version : Not a new customer?

2 questions:
We (my parents and I) are moving soon, and I am trying to decide what to do about the Dish, as I'll be moving off to college in a year or two and will want it there too...
Right now, we have an account under my name. I bought a 2-room system under the Free-For-All plan; and then added a DP34 and a third reciever. However I want a PVR. And don't want to pay $300 for one.. so here is my first question:
When we move, if we get a new system and account under my parents' name, will (in two years) Dish still recognize me as a previous customer? I'd probably end up selling my recievers on eBay or something and just take the hit.
My second question is.. under the Digital Home Plan, is the equipment yours after 12mo or do you still have to return it if somewhere down the road you cancel service?

If the new acct is set up under your parents name at the new address & phone number your status as a previous customer is irrelevent. You can close your acct when you move and give or sell some or all of your eqmt to your parents to be added to their acct. Just don't try to to activate one of your rcvrs on their acct if yours is still active.

Under DHP your never own the eqmt. You are leasing it. It remains the property of E* and must be returned when you d/c. You do have the option of buying it instead of returning it but you don't get a better price just because you've already been using it.

What if I want to open a new account myself once I move in a couple of years? Will I be seen as a new customer since I am at a different address (and it will be in a different city) or can they somehow track me as an old customer?

If you have a different name, phone number, and address then you can set up as a new customer but have any the same (especially phone number and address) its going to duplicate in the system. I am sure there are several Dish customers that have the same name as that is to be expected. I do not know if they would check that or not but it is not supposed to be done.
DISH'S rules say you are a new customer only once and can get discounted new customer offers only once. Reality is if you move and have a "new" identity the computer will not match you up as an existing customer. But use the same credit card, social security number, telephone number, or receivers you own and you increase the odds of a match occurring. DISH dosen't care how long it has been since you subscribed, you were previously a customer.
Directv also has the same rules about previous customers but they don't seem to pursue the issue as much. As a dealer I am supposed to check for previous status on both systems. I know DISH will charge back a dealer for a customer who they determine was a previous customer.

I don't recall giving Dish my SSN.. do they have some other way of obtaining it?

They obtain it from customers that do Digital Home Plan (DHP) and some of those that take promotions that require credit cards and commitments. Most probably have not given them the social security number. They was going to make it a requirement before activating a system but since it had been told that customers have the right to not give it out they have not asked for it unless its DHP or a certain commitment.
Currently Digital Home Plan and Free Dish promotions require Social Security numbers for a credit check and there is no option about giving it, if you wish to participate you must give it. Some other offers from Dish have requested a Social Security number such as the PVR upgrade contract, here it was optional.
