The person receiving the message still has to pay for these—but you won't have to, and that's what counts, right?

Simply enter the person's phone number, along with the appropriate carrier-specific e-mail address from those listed below, into any e-mail client. The result will appear on the person's phone as an SMS text message. Note: All phone numbers are 10 digits with no dashes (example: 2125551212).

Alltel: [Phone Number]@message.alltel.com
AT&T: [Phone Number]@txt.att.net
Nextel: [Phone Number]@messaging.nextel.com
Sprint: [Phone Number]@messaging.sprintpcs.com
T-Mobile: [Phone Number]@tmomail.net
Verizon: [Phone Number]@vtext.com
Virgin Mobile: [Phone Number]@vmobl.comBut remember, you're sending an SMS text message, not an email, so keep it "ASAP" -- "As Short As Possible."

This isnt new but I wonder if the sender will be hit with a data charge if the carrier sees is as an email rather than a text.

It comes through as a text to the recipient. I use it with a friend who has VZW and it works great.

Right. I was referring to the senders carrier.

Data charges would apply if sending it as an e-mail from your mobile phone, but if sending it from your PC, it would be like any other e-mail and likely included in your ISP charges.

With T-Mobile (which is my provider for a few more weeks) thats who how I get charged when I have done this. The receiving phone gets a text charge but I dont.

Exactly, this is email. No charge at all unless you pay for email normally (most of us dont unless you are talking about mobile devices).

Yahoo Messenger allows you to send an SMS. Go under "Actions" in the Yahoo Messenger menu.
