There appears to be 3 ways to reset a Directv drv..

1. From Menu
2. RBR (Red Button)
3. Power Cycle via power cord...

Is there a difference between them all? IE does a RBR do something different than a Menu Reset?

The prefered method is a menu reset, unless the machine is locked up and requires a red button reset, pulling the plug would be the last resort. Essentially the reult is the same although a menu reset is less of a strain on the electronics.

It's like the difference between restarting your computer via the menu, restarting via the reset button, or pulling the plug. The goal is to try to restart in the most "graceful" possible way, giving the receiver a chance to close open files and prepare itself for restart if possible.

best way
if you have no other option [frozen box]
use if 1 & 2 don't work and give 10 mins before connecting power again.
