Does Dish have any plans for an all in one unit that plays all sorts of media files? There are a couple of boxes coming out that have PVR features, as well as DVD players/DVR recorders, huge hard drives (expandable!), play MP3s and AVIs, connect to your network for moving files back and forth from your computers, etc.
I want a box like this, but I don't want to lose the digital quality, as these boxes can't record the raw MPEG4 data stream.

Sure, everyone wants that but it doesn't exist that I have seen.

They made a prototype combo Dish/DVD box at one time that never made it to the market because of the severe drop in price of stand alone DVD players. This box had no record capability though and only played DVD's. It's probably sitting at Charlie's house now though.

There was a device that they were going to come out with but I have not heard anything about it for a good while now. It was supposed to be a whole house server and do some of this functionality as you had mentioned. It was through another company but I forget the name of it now.

That was the Moxi Media Server which won all sorts of awards at E3 last year.
However, people estimated that the box would cost around $1500 and interest cooled. Also the founder of the company sold it to another concern, so who knows where it will be going, if anywhere.

Now if this is reasonably priced I'd go for it. by reasonable I mean $5 a month.

The reason I started the thread was because I was salivating over this:
