Is there a set top box in existance that has PVR capabilities, but you don't hace to pay the monthly fee? Tivo's nice, but not worth $13.00 a month... Any ideas?
If you get a DTV Tivo box there isn't a $13 fee. The fee is only $4.99/month, however D will wave the fee if you have a TC Premier. There are other PVR systems but I don't know what the fee are. I do know that if you have D, you won't really find a simpler system than to use the integrated receiver.

The only problem is I would rather not pay a service fee, its the principle rather than anything else. Unfortinetly, the features work good, and was just woundering if there's a non pay PVR service built into a reciever. I think dish network is the only one that has this type.

But theirs cost a lot more than Directv's. A 721 costs $500 vs $200 for a DirecTiVo.

It depends on what you consider "non pay PVR service" :)

At $4.99 a month for the DVR charge, the HDVR2/2nd STB would be in use 70 MONTHS, or nearly 6 YEARS before it finally cost as much as the 721/301 combo. If anyone plans on using a 721 that long before they can count the pennies they've saved, they're welcome to them - they earned 'em, I guess :D
