If this is true, I would be surprised. The fiber link from Alaska to Cheyenne would be extremely expensive, but then, I wonder if it's technically or fiscally feasible to set up a uplink facility from Alaska to the uplink frequencies for the Alaska spot beam.

It is my understanding that Dish already hsa agreements on the fiber link.

Fiber is already in place, has been for years!
I have mixed feelings on this. First of all I don't belive anything Dish Network says when it comes to programming the other thing is I currently get a waiver so I can get distant locals. Reason I want the distants is for CBS HD. I lied about my address in order to get the waiver. Anyone know if/when the Anchorage locals come up if they would automatically switch me to Anchorage locals?

The entire message says: "As of 7/8 - DISH Network has announced the launch of the Local Channels for Anchorage on August 28, 2003. We will post more information as it becomes available"
Where did Dish announce this? Was it on a retail chat? Press Release? I want to see something official, nit just second hand. Otherwise I don't beleive it. Call me Tom. :D

I emailed dish asking about Anchorage locals here is there response, notice they talk about superdish which will NOT work in Alaska according to an email I received from them last week
"Thank you for your e-mail. We do not have a date for the availability of the Anchorage local package. DISH Network recently announced plans to launch 42 new designated market areas local TV channels, provided retransmission agreements with local TV stations can be finalized in each of the markets. Anchorage is one of the cities listed. If the contracts are successfully finalized this will bring the total number of markets to 106 by the end of this year. DISH Network has also announced plans to offer local channels via satellite in even more cities across the nation by end of 2004. Currently DISH Network offers 64 U.S. cities.
Customers in the 42 new markets areas will require the use of either DISH Network's existing DISH 500 antenna or its new SuperDish, a multi-satellite dish antenna. The SuperDish, an elliptical 66-centimeter dish, is capable of offering customers access to hundreds of popular DISH Network channels, local channels in new markets, HDTV channels and international programming. The SuperDish will be capable of receiving satellite signals from three orbital locations."

This canned e-mail response was old when they sent it to you. Dish currently offers 70 local markets, not 64. They have launched 4 of the 42 announced cities too.

hehe - old response :(
Too bad, I can sit here and watch any of the Big 6 from Anchorage and DISH apparently can't use that feed. Must be some cable thing.

John,
I don't know if dish "can't" use it or if the stations won't LET them use it. I'm pretty sure that Dish wants the stations to pay a portion of the backhaul costs and that is the reason NONE of them want anything to do with it. I know you can see the channels FTA, but I'm sure it would NOT be free for Dish to pluck it off the air and redisdribute it.

I am sure it would not be free either. Just suggesting it must be a cable thing, since they have been there for months.
AkShark, they are on a DVB mux on AMC 7 Cband in the clear.
