I dropped the sports pack years ago when
1.) Empire Sports Network went down
and
2.) I realized that I would never see a Sabres game due to the utterly criminal black out rules

I now have it for free for 6 months as my anniversary present this year (the big 10!)

So...
which one covers WNY sports?

MSG covers western NY state, so you'll get the Sabres games but those will be on the MSG HD Alt. channel which I can't remember exactly, but it's approx. 636 or so.

You should also get MSG HD 634 (minus Rangers games), MSG+ HD (minus Devils and Islanders games), and YES HD and SNY HD.

Put in your zipcode to find what regional sports channels you should receive on Directv.

Use this link: http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global/contentPageIF.jsp?assetId=3450006

I didn't list STO or FSN Pittsburgh as you need higher packages to get these extra RSNs. You get the ones I listed no matter what package you have.

The special Sabres channels are 638 (SD) for home and road games and 638-1 (HD) for home games.

But he lives in MA now so he wont get Sabres games on MSG. He'll need Center Ice for that. Everything else on MSG (minus hockey games) he should see fine.

i thinkg with the whole msg blackout issue he will probably only get channel 638 for every game. The hd feed will be blacked out strictly because of his location

Only if you LIVE in that zip code. The Sports Pack doesn't provide ANY pro sports, except in select areas where a "local" RSN is available only via the Sports Pack (which sometimes happens when you live on the outskirts of a team's broadcast territory).

To answer the OP, I don't think there are any RSN's that specifically target western NY. Sabres games are on an alternate feed of MSG Network (which DirecTV places on channel 638, but that channel won't come in outside Sabres territory without NHL Center Ice).

With respect, you asked the wrong question.

Here is how this works:

With the basic package you will get the local sports network covering your area, with the pro games of the local teams.

You can buy the Sports Pack, which is everybody else's local sports networks.

BUT for 99% of people (the exception being people who live in some rural areas equidistant from several cities, and thus "overlapped" with conflicting claims) the Sports Pack brings you NO additional live pro sports. The Sports Pack only brings you the other material on these networks, not the live major pro sports.

You can also buy the Pay Per Season packages, such as NHLCI, NBALP, etc. These packs will bring you the games of other teams in the particular league, sources from regional sports networks and elsewhere.

Applying this to your sitution in Mass. The basic package would get you the Boston RSNs with the Boston teams. The Sports Pack would get you the other 30 RSNs, including the Buffalo version of MSG, with ALL live pro material blacked out. The NHLCI pack would get you the games of all other NHL teams (other than the Bruins, which you get already).

To answer your actual question, there isn't a full time RSN for WNY on D*. You only have the part time MSG alternate channels on 638 & 638-1. If you have the sports pack, the only extra programming you will see is the Sabres post game show.

And if you switch to 638-1 after the game you will see the post game show in HD. Its great for watching the highlights, but makes you miss the MSG HD game feed even more. Sometimes it takes a couple minutes after the game ends for them to turn it on, so be patient. Occasionally after the post game ends, they forget to shut it off and you see infomercials. The only local WNY sports channel is on Time Warner cable and its called Time Warner Cable SportsNet, but you will never see that on D*.

The only other network that carries Central/Western New York stuff is SNY (639). They often carry TWCS' coverage of Syracuse home games.

Do you get the Sabres HD feed on 634 or is it on the alternate MSG HD channel 638-1?

All Sabres feeds are on the 638 (SD channel) and 638-1 (HD channel). The only time they are on the main MSG channels of 634 or 635 is when they are playing one of the NYC teams, and then that channel will be blacked out since it would not be the Sabres feed or announcers.
