View Full Version : Angels and Demons VOD - appeared on my dvr this morning
Anyone else get this?, it must be a glitch like Monsters and Aliens.
One time can be a mistake, twice is getting to be a problem.

None of my DVR's are showing this.
It's on both our R22 and our HR23

Had it this morning as well. But, upon closer inspection it was listed as a 2 minute recording.

What is that? I am hope I am not being billed for a PPV? I never order PPV's.

Yeah, I had it. It was just a 2 minute preview of the movie. I watched it and then deleted it.
No harm.

The trailer showed up on the list of recorded programs on my HR21. However, when played there is no sound. Is this Directv's new way to promote "Cinema"?

Dear DTV,
Strike Two
Putting this in my queue just produces questions from the wife and frustration from me.
Stop spamming me! I already pay $96 a month. I am a big boy and if I want to order the freaking movie then I will.
It's a preview. Just delete it. Spam.. I don't think so.

Really?? I dont remember scheduling that to record. If its not SPAM then what exactly do you call a recording that is unsolicited (For the second time)?

It was probably an accidental mistake....quit stressing over it.

You won't be charged for it, even if you watch it, since it seems to be only two minutes. You're only charged for PPV if you watch more than five minutes.

It not only had no sound but also the video looked like poor VHS quality. What a way to advertise a 1080p presentation!

it's sneaky, evil, marketing at it's worst. D spends enough air time on cross channel promotions, they don't need to clutter my recording list too.

i had no sound with mine.
They are obviously testing ways to put stuff on your "recorded programs" that you did not put there. Not a good idea

Take a chill pill. It is only a previewo f a ppv. It is a form of advertising. Directv needs to get revenues so they add the preview to a dvr that they own.
Cable and Dish do the same thing.

I had it show up on one HR20-100. I just deleted it without even looking at what it was. If it was an unsolicited trailer, I wish I would have watched it. Especially if the trailer was in 1080P as the recording did indicate in my list. I still have not seen D*1080P on a real movie yet, only animated ones. Darn Kids!
You are never charged until you accept the charge via OSD, so that is not a concern to me.
D* has a partition on every hard drive, I think around 40GB, that is for them to use, the user can not record to that space. So I guess they can do whatever they want with it. I guess the alternative would be paying more. I choose unsolicited movie trailers.

I had it on one of my HR20-700's. I deleted it. If I had wanted to watch it, since it is PPV, I would have to pick a time & channel & watch it there, right? As opposed to anything On Demand which uses the Internet connection to download the entire program & you can watch at any time?

By sheer coincidence I had watched Angel & Demons Thursday night on a BluRay (Netflix). When I turned the TV on Friday evening, I was only half heartedly watching what I was doing when I hit List and caught a glimpse of Angels & Demons sitting at the top of the List. Wait...what? I did a double take, and for a quick moment I thought how the heck did that happen? How did a Blu-Ray movie record itself on my DVR? Then calmer heads prevailed when I saw the VOD symbol.
I am not concerned that I will be chargedfor a PPV. I know how that works. I know I can delete things.
However, I do not ever want to see things in my list that I did not explicitly tell the machine to record. Period. This is either an example of incompetence on someones part if it is a mistake or evidence that they just might try to do this for real in the future.
Both are not acceptable.

People said the same thing when cable started showing commercials.

Is it REALLY that big of a deal....seriously?

Having an unsolicited movie or other PPV event clip show up on the playlist every month or so isn't really a big deal after we get used to the idea of DTV using this as a method of promoting the service. If, however, they start advancing this to a daily event that we have to deal with, then it's a big deal and another headache for us.
I vote for "no advertising" on the playlist.

Amazing how people will just jump to conclusions....this was from the D* Twitter feed: "some time back this was sent in error to some DVRs. You can simply delete this title if you do not wish to be charged."
Yes, accidents do happen...

DIRECTV has no intention of spamming your play list. Whatever this is, I'm sure the result you are seeing was not intended.

My guess is that this was intended to be put in the Showcase area and mistakenly put in the User's Playlist.

yeah, it is not a glitch, it is another way dishonest marketing people have come up with to trap people into paying for this crap

It's just advertising. It says 24 hour RENTAL in the description when you click on it. RENTAL means you must pay for it. There is an option to delete it. I don't think it's dishonest. Maybe difficult for some to understand rental means extra charges.

How is it any different than those AOL discs you used to get in the mail? Don't want AOL (who would), throw it away. Install is and use it, and get charged. Same concept.

Not many do now, but back in the day there were I think around 20 million who did. I got mine free still do. I kinda worked for them. Spent most of my time playing online. Got paid to play best job ever. I got some good money from stock options too.

It is dishonest.. It is TWO minutes long! Not a full movie.

All PPVs have a 5-minute preview .. Since this "movie" is only 2 minutes long, you should be able to view the entire trailer for free.

I had it with no audio and letterboxed. Why would 1080p be letterboxed? Why no audio? I watched this silent preview for about 30 seconds and deleted it. Not a big deal that it was there but a bigger deal that they were promoting something that looked awful and sounded...well...it had no sound.

Well, if the movie is originated in a wider aspect ratio than HD, the letterboxing is the correct way to show it.
As far as equating this to AOL discs, If I were paying AOL for service each month and they still sent me all those discs, I would have certainly complained to AOL about that also.
I think voicing concern over this is perfectly reasonable. If no one ever complained, they would have no impetus to get things correct. I can tell you because my wife has to deal with it, if lots of people call into a call center because of an error, you can best beleive a company tries to avoid that in the future.
