If I take my new HD receiver from the Houston area to New York, will I still be able to get my Houston local programing?

No, they are on spot beams that will not reach any where near NY.

you will likely be out of the spot beam and not get it.

Thanx Raoul for your quick reply. You saved me a lot of time. RC
If you move to NY and take your DirecTV equipment, then you need to coordinate with DirecTV and give them the new service address. You will then get the proper local stations for your NY location.
There is a program called Movers Connection, which should get you the move and installation at your new location at no cost.
There are both technical and legal reasons why you can't get locals from one television market in a different market (Houston in NY for example).

No everyone qualifies for a free move. Customers just coming aboard are subject to a $50 fee with in the first year of their service. Existing customers who have already have already moved in the past year are subject to a fee the second time and can be charged $50 and up to $199 on a second or third move.
