View Full Version : LaCrosse and Traverse City switching to MPEG4 today

This morning, LaCrosse, WI and Traverse City, MI officially switched to MPEG4 by moving off the 72.5 orbital slot over to 99 / 103.

Three more DMAs still to switch at the end of December....Lincoln, NE, Burlington, VT and Waco, TX. If you still have your older MPEG2 equipment active, it will not be able to see locals once the transition takes place.

There are different markets that will transition in 2010, but the dates will be later in the year, not earlier. More to come

Now we just have to catch up & take care of the folks Directv may have forgot! lol.
We recently had LiL DMA realignment, and some folks were neglected. Had at least 20 service calls generated because all of a sudden their locals stopped working. Going from a 119 standard market to MP4.

Can you believe that? The CSR's generated service calls!
What boobs.

Please excuse my stupidity, but did this change take away the SD local channels for these areas? I set my channels to "all channels", and there is only one of each local channel (HD version).

No. The change moves those local SD channels from MPEG2 beamed from 72.5ºW to MPEG4 beamed from either 99 or 103ºW, requiring newer equipment and SlimLine dish.

That's what I thought, but I can no longer find the SD version of my local channels. Granted, I haven't tried looking for them for a long time, but they are no longer listed when I look at the "all channels" setting. There are a FEW times when I like to watch the SD version of our locals.

If they offer an HD version of the channel that is the only version available. You don't need a HD subscription to get them but they are the HD channels.

I'll get concerned when they start moving MPEG2 locals off the 101 to MPEG4-only....not before!! ;)

I live up in northern michigan and I have 2 seperate dishes in 2 differnt spots on my deck. I was getting the locals on one and everything else on the other one.
This morning at 6am locals went out all together, can I just move the "local" dish to the new bird and get them? Also I have a h21-100 ird and am not sure what configeration I would set it on to pick up the signal?
If it will work what would the up and down, left to right degrees be?
Thanks,

Oh I assure you, they weren't forgotten. Sometimes folks throw away letter notifications, don't read their email, ignore the phone calls. There's always that 10% or so that no matter what you do, no matter how many times you call, etc they just like to wait. Sounds like me in high school....wait until the night before to do that report. :D

Not to mention the messages on channel 10 and 30 telling us that this switch was going to happen. And the phonecalls were plentiful, even well after my dish and receivers were swapped out. In fact only a few weeks ago they started leaving messages on my answering machine telling me that my locals were going to be moving and I needed new equipment, and I had the upgrade late Sept or early Oct.

You will need a slim3 dish to get your locals. They did most of us last summer.

What kind of dish do you have for "everything else"? Do you have HD? The H21-100 is capable of receiving the HD locals for us, we are on the 99 Sat, transponder 17. Go into the H21 menu under setup/system setup/satellite then select repeat sat setup and select option 3 or 4. Slimline 3, or Slimline 5 if you have a 5 lnb dish. If you do this and you cant get locals then I would call DirecTv and mention "free 72.5 local swap"

Thanks for replying.
I do not have hd programing. And both of my dishes on my deck are 18" dual lnbs. I was hoping to just realign the local dish to get the locals again, can this be done, if so how?
thanks,

No it can not be done with the equipment you have. You will need to have someone to install a Slimline.

But, I dont think that we got a free trial of our locals.. I had never subscribed to them.. and then never gotten a free chance to decide to have them.. and I don't believe that they are on now..

I do have EAST AND WEST COAST.. don't get me wrong.. but I would have thought that they would have let us see if we were "missing something"..

MPEG2 locals on 101 won't ever be "moved" they'll just be turned off.

Hmm, the calls should have stopped once you swapped out. Did you still have one receiver that was MPEG 2 perhaps? Once you're all "MPEG 4" that should have ceased.

You do not have to get HD but you do have to have a slimline dish and MPEG4 capable receivers. Call Directv and ask about the "free 72 swap".

I know it is free to do a swap with dtv, but I like doing it myself. Is there anything tricky in installing yourself?

It can be tricky to peak the Ka signals, especially without a meter. And you have to be much more careful about having a level and plumb mast. So it is much trickier to install than the old 18" dish, but it certainly can be done.

Other than what was already mentioned it will also be tricky to get them to ship the equipment to you, they won't, so that means you would have to pay for something that is free.

A few years back I installed dish network that also had 3 differnt angles. Is this like that with 3 differnt angles?
